Das "Jus Potandi" gehörte zwar nicht zu seinen Hauptwerken, es traf aber, wie der Erfolg zeigt, auf ein Publikum, das sich an der ironischen Mischung von Gelehrsa…mkeit und Trinkfröhlichkeit ergötzte. Geschrieben für Gebildete, speziell für Juristen. Von einem wirklichen "Zech-Recht" kann keine Rede sein. Das Ganze ist eher der Spaß eines jungen Dichters, der zum Vergnügen seiner Zechkumpane eine Perücke aufsetzte und seine juristischen Kenntnisse in der Schenke demonstrierte.

Noch in demselben Jahr kam in Leipzig eine deutsche Bearbeitung heraus: 'Jus potandi oder Zech-Recht, darinnen von Vrsprung, Gebräuchen und Solemnitäten . Zechens und Zutrinckens . sehr lustig discuriert wird'. Der Bearbeiter ist unbekannt, könnte aber, wie vermutet worden ist, aus dem Meißnischen stammen. . Unter dem Pseudonym Blasius Multibibus verbarg sich der englische Dichter Richard Brathwaite (1588-1673). . Das 'Jus potandi' gehört zwar nicht zu seinen Hauptwerken, es traf aber, wie der Erfolg zeigt, auf ein Publikum, das sich an der ironischen Mischung von Gelehrsamkeit und Trinkfröhlichkeit ergötzte. Geschrieben für Gebildete, speziell für Juristen, bezog es seinen satirischen Gehalt aus der Kombination scheinbar ernsthafter Quaestionen und Exegesen römischrechtlicher Textstellen mit dem handfesten Material von 'Wein, Weib und Gesang'. Von einem wirklichen 'Zech-Recht' kann keine Rede sein. Das Ganze ist eher der Spaß eines jungen Dichters, der zum Vergnügen seiner Zechkumpane eine gelehrte Perücke aufsetzt und seine juristischen Kenntnisse in der Schenke demonstriert. . Der vorliegende Nachdruck beruht auf einem Exemplar der Universitätsbibliothek Tübingen, das 1871 aus der Bibliothek Ludwig Uhlands dorthin gelangt ist." (Nachwort S. 1-3 und 18).
