Tilman van Gameren (Utrecht um 1631 ? Warschau 1706) schuf, nach Wanderjahren in Frankreich und Italien, sein Oeuvre in Polen. Dort befinden sich seine zahlreichen Bauten, soweit sie noch stehen oder nach Zerstörung rekonstruiert worden sind; dort fanden sich die wesentlichen Quellen, insbesondere ein Bestand von etwa 1100 Zeichnungen Tilmans, die nicht nur für die Erschließung seines umfangreichen Werkes, sondern für die Barockforschung überhaupt von großer Bedeutung sind. Die deutsche Ausgabe des Buches ist mehr als eine Übersetzung; sie ist die erweiterte und vollständig überarbeitete Fassung des 1973 erschienenen polnischen Originals. Das Kernstück bildet hier wie dort der Katalog sämtlicher Bauten und Entwürfe. Ein spezielles Argument für die deutsche Ausgabe des Buches liegt in der Zusammenarbeit Tilman van Gamerens mit dem jungen Andreas Schlüter bei der plastischen Ausgestaltung des Krasinski-Palastes in Warschau. Die Giebelreliefs dort weisen auf Schlüters Meisterwerke in Berlin voraus. Der Autor, Professor Dr. Stanislaw Mossakowski, ist Direktor des Kunsthistorischen Instituts der Akademie der Wissenschaften in Warschau.
