Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Acceptable. No Jacket. Frederick s. Church and James H. Moser Ilustrador. Originally published in 1880 this is the 1893 printing. If you need a nice copy of this title, this is not it. Most if not all the leading edges of the text block show the tide line of a water stain and corresponding rippling of the pages. Light wear to the binding. A portrait Brer Rabbit gold-stamped on the front cover. A Christmas greeting in pencil from 1893 on the first blank end sheet. The book is complete, but because of the cosmetic issues outlined, it is sold as a reading/research copy.

International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased postal rates will be quoted, where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. A wonderful book, full of wit, black humor and love between and ex-slave and a young white boy. In spite of the fact that some of the words are no longer "politically correct" this book is a must for all those persons who would like a closer look at what life was really like in the South in the years following the Civil War, and what gave great joy to the reader or listener. Uncle Remus is the fictional title character and narrator of a collection of African American folktales compiled and adapted by Joel Chandler Harris and published in book form in 1881. Harris was a journalist in post-Reconstruction era Atlanta, and he produced seven Uncle Remus books. He did so by introducing tales that he had heard and framing them in the plantation context. He wrote his stories in a dialect which was his interpretation of the Deep South African-American language of the time. For these framing and stylistic choices, Harris's collection has garnered controversy since its publication. Many of these stories are believed to have Creek Indian influence too. Ref CC 7.

Harris, a white Southern journalist, collected these folktales from enslaved and formerly enslaved African Americans on Georgia plantations. Serialized in newspapers across the United States, the tales proved hugely popular and this first edition was a bestseller on both sides of the Atlantic. The books were responsible for compounding racist stereotypes and disseminating them across generations of readers, as well as portraying a rosy picture of the American South. At the same time, Harris was the first folklorist to make a serious effort to preserve Southern black oral traditions and his books are an important resource for ethnologists and contemporary writers attempting to reconstruct traditional folktales.BAL 7100. Illustrated with 8 plates and text engravings by Frederick S. Church and James Moser. While not a First Edition (1882), this copy has a wonderful SIGNED AUTOGRAPH QUOTATION on the front endpaper: "'Oh, don't stay long -- Oh, don't stay late--/Let it be a long ways ter de Goodbye Gate!'/Joel Chandler Harris/West End, Atlanta:/15 May, 1891." While this quote has been reported to come from UNCLE REMUS, it in fact is from a Southern ballad, a Corn-husking song titled "Round It Up A Heap It Up": "Round it up a heap it up a Round it up a corn, A joog-a-loa./De big owl hoot and cry for his mate, My honey, my love!/Oh, don't stay long, oh, don't stay late./It ain't so fur to de goodbye gate." In the book "UNCLE REMUS," JOEL CHANDLER HARRIS AS SEEN AND REMEMBERED BY A FEW OF HIS FRIENDS, the authors on pages 106-108 explain how Harris would usually write this quote in his books. When asked to write an aphorism in a book, Harris said he had no aphorisms and would write this quote. The closest it comes to anything in UNCLE REMUS is the quote "don't stay long!" which occurs in THE PLOUGH-HANDS' SONG (JASPER COUNTY-1860.) on pages 161-162. In any case survivals of any edition of UNCLE REMUS with any quote are scarce. Some aging to the text; the covers bright and strong. Near Fine.
