Paper measures 5" x 5 1/2." Paper reads: "Very truly yours, Anson P. Morrill, Ex Gov. of Maine, Augusta, ME, Apr. 7, '81." Paper and signature are very clean and intact. Anson P. Morrill (1803-1887) was an American politician. He served as the 24th Governor of Maine from 1858-1861. He also served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1861-1863 and the Maine House of Representatives. From 1864-1866 and 1873-1875, Morrill was the president of the Maine Central Railroad. Has been folded, now flat. Light stain at top horizontal fold (see our photos). Appointing A. S. Godfrey as Captain of Company A, Artillery in the Second Regiment of the Second Brigade and Fifth Division of the Maine Volunteer Militia. 10" tall by 15 1/2" wide. Godfrey ended up in Lincoln, NE after the Civil War, where he established a grain elevator and lumberyard in what is today the Historic Haymarket. His elevator was approximately where the sports arena now sits.
