Illustrated with full-page engravings, it remains a significant document of mid-nineteenth century American historiography on frontier warfare. Rédigé sous pseudonyme par John Frost, cet ouvrage illustré témoigne de la vision coloniale des peuples autochtones, perçus comme des adversaires à soumettre plutôt que comme des civilisations à part entière.
