Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. 6 1/2" x 9 1/2", side sewn card covers, [20]pp. Printed by Kaz Press, published, it would seem from the last leaf, by Shoestring Press of "Gotham NY." An undated "revised and enlarged" 2nd printing of the 1967 original. Presumably, not too much later than the first, though some later printings are dated to 1970 (on bibliographic grounds unknown to me). Cover design/art credited to one Sharon Selftel, rear cover to one S. Einhorn. Two photos of Moondog, one at a hotel entrance, the other in studio. A third photograph (opposite the "introduction") of Vickie Hayes (chez Vickie Hayes Theatre Workshop). Introduction by one Susan Lee Merrill. The bulk of the pamphlet consists of extracts from a larger body of Moondog's poetry. A concluding section transcribes some of the score for Moondog's "Symphonique No. 9" (arranged for SQ). Very scarce. A VG copy with mild creasing, tanning and soiling to the covers with a mild curl to the head of the text block. A clean text, no writing or names; a solid bit of sewing.

Añadir al carritoCondición: Gentle vertical fold; fine. Double-sided mimeographed leaflet, 5-1/4 x 8-1/2 in. Nine verse couplets by Moondog on recto; verso is a lengthy "Note" about the release and reception of his 1969 recording on Columbia Masterworks. Blinded from an accident in early childhood, musician, composer, and poet Louis Hardin adopted the pseudonym and persona of Moondog and became a well-known figure in the avant-garde circles and on the street of New York. For many years he stood at the corner of Sixth Avenue and 53rd Street performing his music, dressed in a fur cape and horned helmet. Although popularly regarded as an eccentric -- called "the Viking of Sixth Ave" -- He was admired by artists ranging from Benny Goodman, Charlie Parker, and Arturo Toscanini to Steve Reich, Frank Zappa, and Elvis Costello. His music was used in films such as The Big Lebowski, and he even appeared in the '60s cult classic film Chappaqua by Conrad Rooks, in a cast that also included Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, Ravi Shankar, Ornette Coleman, and Ed Sanders, among others. He was an important influence on Reich and Philip Glass and other composers of the minimalist and systems music traditions. Along with several albums of serious music, he also released a recording of children's songs, sung by Julie Andrews and Martyn Green. He published his verse couplets in the book The Millenniad (1959) and in Moondog Yearbook (1967). Leaflets such as this were likely distributed by Moondog himself from his streetcorner perch.

Añadir al carritoFirst edition, sole printing, presumably the author's own copy, with his signature and "Nov, 14th 1959 received" on the front pastedown. This collection of one thousand rhyming couplets was the musician's only published book and is a considerable rarity. No copy is listed in auction records and only four examples are listed in institutional library holdings worldwide. Of the four copies in institutions, three are in the USA (NYU, Harvard, and Brown) and one at the National Library of Israel, which may be explained by the grievous anti-Semitism exhibited in many of the couplets. Louis Thomas Hardin (1916-1999), also known as "Moondog", was an outsider musician and poet, blind from the age of 16, who throughout the 1950s and 1960s became a feature of the New York scene, busking on 6th Avenue around 54th Street wearing a cloak and horned helmet, which earned him the moniker "the Viking of 6th Avenue". He associated with Beat poets such as Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs, and his classically influenced minimalist jazz earned him the respect of the composers Philip Glass and Steve Reich. Octavo. Original plain grey paper over boards, spine professionally rebacked with original paper largely preserved, lower edge untrimmed. Edges sunned with a few slight bumps, a few leaves roughly opened: a good copy.

A fine copy of this scarce ephemeral pamphlet, originally sold on the street by Moondog himself (or his associates). A collection of musical compositions, plus a scheme of "universal reckoning" by the legendary blind poet, composer, conductor, philosopher & eccentric. Moondog -- the Viking of Sixth Avenue -- (given name Louis Thomas Hardin) spent most of his years in New York City on the street, dressed in Norse Druidic garb, performing his very original poetry and musical compositions.
