Covering predominantly French, German and English horsemen (with a smattering from the USA, Iberia, Belgium and Scandinavia) each of the 130+ profiles is a fascinating mix of biographical detail and an overview of their training principles and successes. If the horseman also turned author, there are often substantial quotes from their works together with useful bibliographies. This book is drawn from a series of articles Monteilhet wrote for L'Information Hippique between 1960 and 1976, re-edited for publication in book form by René Bacharach. 277 Pages, with text in French and about 30 portraits/photographs. The upper cover's top right corner shows signs of a barely noticeable bump, otherwise this copy is in excellent condition. A heavy book, so additional postage will apply.

La légende du cheval Bayard à Saint-Maurice-sur Vingeanne. Au milieu du siècle, dernier un paysan de Saint-Maurice-sur Vingeanne possédait un cheval de trait nommé Bayard. On surnomma ce paysan : Bayard. Cet agriculteur était sans peur, cependant peut-être pas sans reproches disait-on. Les gens du village pensaient que le cheval était ainsi nommé Bayard en hommage au célèbre chevalier. Un jour, un villageois à qui on présenta une statue du chevalier Bayard, fut surpris, car il s attendait à voir un cheval. Le cheval Bayard est un mythe, très ancien. Le paysan de Saint-Maurice-sur-Vingeanne, connaissait peut-être la légende du cheval Bayard, qui est un cheval-fée. On retrouve cette histoire dans le cadre du mythe des 4 fils Aymon. Le cheval Bayard est le fils d un dragon et d un serpent, c est un cheval-fée, il a été conquis sur l ile volcanique de Bocan (c est-à-dire Vulcano, l une des iles Lipari), où les démons le retenaient prisonnier, par l enchanteur Maugis, qui l a ensuite offert à son cousin Renaut, l un des quatre fils Aymon. Doué de pouvoirs magiques et d une intelligence humaine, il se montre d une totale fidélité envers son nouveau maitre. Les légendes locales, assure qu il hante toujours la forêt d Ardenne.
