This book introduces the concept of activist music research, emphasising action and social responsibility and suggests that music research can be used to promote social and ecological justice. This is discussed in a series of position papers by music researchers who engage in public debate in their various roles - educator, critic, journalist, DJ, producer, promoter - and work with other actors in civil society and culture. The book suggests that we are experiencing an activist turn in music research, evidenced by the growing number of projects and publications discussing inequalities in musical practices and the impact music research can have on these inequalities. This idea is explored in a series of position papers and contemplative texts, where music researchers, music educators and artistic researchers reflect on how their work and the position they occupy as professionals in society serves eco-social justice and equity. What is the point of studying and teaching music in an age of ecocide, neo(liberal)-colonialism, rampant racial inequities, persistent gender identity and sexual orientation discrimination? What does social and ecological responsibility and sustainability mean in music research? The idea for the book was conceived within the context of Suoni, a non-profit independent research association in Finland founded as a self-organizing and independent network for scholars interested in exploring methods, pedagogics, practices and action for eco-social equity in relation to music and music research.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. A radical exploration of how music educators and artists are using research as a tool for justice in an era of crisis and transformation. Can music research drive social and ecological change? Music, Research, and Activism: Prospects and Projects in Northern Europe argues that it canand must. This bold collection studies the emerging activist turn in music studies, where researchers and artists engage directly in public debates and cultural movements. By questioning systemic inequalities in the music industry and exploring the role of music education in an era of climate crisis, the contributors to this volume reflect on how their work can serve eco-social justice. Drawing on their diverse experiences as educators, critics, DJs, producers, and community organizers, they offer a compelling vision of music research as an agent of transformation. Rooted in the independent research network Suoni, this volume speaks to music scholars and students eager to rethink the role of music in shaping a more equitable world. Engaging and accessible, it challenges us to ask: What does social responsibility look like in music research today? This new collection suggests that we are experiencing an activist turn in music research. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: As New. 1st Edition. Oliver Whitehead (b. 1947) is a versatile artist who moved from England to Finland in 1971. He works across a wide range of mediums, including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, moving images, and spoken word. His practice is shaped by a critical contemporary perspective, while still leaving room for viewers to form their own interpretations of the world and its state. Whitehead's work often revisits themes such as the fetishistic nature of consumer culture, the observation of urban spaces, journal-like reflections on daily life, and the theme of peace, which he has explored through chalk drawings in public spaces. This book offers an insight into the artist's long career and the recurring themes in his work. Text in English, Swedish and Finnish. 175 pp.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: As New. 1st Edition. Finnish artist Jonna Johansson's work explores the body and the human experience in depth, while also engaging with socially relevant themes. Her paintings touch on topics such as sustainability, equality, and compassion. Johansson often draws inspiration from images found in social media, old paintings, magazines, books, or her own personal collection. The realism of these sources fades during the painting process, making space for bold, fantasy-like imagery in vibrant colors or pastel-toned dreamscapes, where figurative representation merges with non-representational painting. Alongside her powerful portrayals of women, Johansson often contrasts seemingly delicate "bunny" motifs-sketch-like paintings of rabbits-that hide beneath their cute surface a sharp, ironic critique. Her work is characterized by strong expressiveness, influenced by action painting and pop art. She often creates her pieces at floor level, using glossy alkyd paints, palette knives, and trowels, although traditional brushwork with acrylics and oils is also central to her practice. Text in Finnish and English. 79 pp.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: As New. 1st Edition. Finnish artist Bo Haglund (b. 1963) combines comic art, graphic design, and stagecraft with visual art. He began his career in the 1980s as a set designer for theater and film productions, and later worked on textile designs for Marimekko and cartoons for Ny Tid magazine. Eventually, he transitioned from stage design and graphic work into visual art through comics. Haglund's diverse background is reflected in his work, which blends multidimensional emotional landscapes, narrative storytelling, observations of contemporary life, and richly detailed expression. His visually inviting and approachable pieces draw inspiration from a variety of sources, including the performative nature of social media, comics that comment on art history, and Nordic melancholy. In his most recent works, human figures appear hidden within theatrical settings or among vegetation, sometimes fleeing, in transitional spaces, observing, or simply bewildered. The book engages in a dialogue with Haglund's recent work and his multifaceted artistic career. Text in Finnish, Swedish and English. 167 pp.

Tähän eri alojen kirjoittajat vastaavat kirjan artikkeleissa moninaisin tavoin.".
