Paper. Condición: Collectible-Very Good. First Edition. Original first edition gelatin silver print. Laid down on rigid backing; margins trimmed to edge of image. The "living image" for this photograph was formed at Camp Upton, New York on March 18, 1919 by 10,000 officers and enlisted men of the 27th Infantry Division of the New York National Guard. The division had returned to the United States from Europe just 13 days earlier, after having played a crucial role in the final defeat of the German army. And just one week later on March 25, the division was honored with a triumphant parade up Fifth Avenue in New York City. Arthur S. Mole (1889-1983) was a photographer who worked in Zion, Illinois. During and after World War I, Mole traveled with his partner John D. Thomas from one military camp to another, posing thousands of soldiers to form gigantic patriotic symbols that they photographed from a 70 to 80 foot tower. Mole used an 11" by 14" view camera to frame the scenes choreographed by Thomas, who had been the choir director of the church in Zion where Mole first began creating "living photographs." Among the other images created by the team were the Liberty Bell, the Statue of Liberty, Uncle Sam, the U.S. Flag, and a bust of Woodrow Wilson. In his 2001 article in The New Centennial Review, Louis Kaplan wrote, "The so-called living photographs and living insignia of Arthur Mole are photo-literal attempts to recover the old image of national identity at the very moment when the United States entered the Great War in 1917. In these spectacular images, thousands of military troops (and other groups) were choreographed by the photographer in artful formations that reveal patriotic symbols, emblems, or military insignia from a bird's-eye perspective that mimes aerial photography. Mole's photos assert, bolster, and recover the image of American national identity via photographic imaging. Moreover, these military formations serve as rallying points to support U.S. involvement in the war and to ward off any isolationist tendencies. In life during wartime, Mole's patriotic images function as "nationalist propaganda" and instantiate photocultural formations of citizenship for both the participants and the consumers of these group photographs." Of course, Mole and Thomas were commercial photographers, and it should also be noted that the 10,000 soldiers who posed for Living Insignia of the Twenty-Seventh Division were potential buyers of the photograph! When the demand for his "living photographs" dropped in the 1920s, Mole returned to his photography business in Zion. During the Second World War other photographers attempted to take their own living photographs, but none of them reached the level of commercial and artistic success of Mole and Thomas. And the Mole and Thomas photographs are most valued by collectors of photographic images. "Living Photographs" by Mole and Thomas are in the collections of the Chicago Historical Society, the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Library of Congress, and other significant photography collections. Size: 11 3/4" by 10". Arthur S. Mole (ilustrador). Photo.…

No Binding. Condición: Fine. (Mole and Thomas) photographers. "LIVING PHOTOGRAPH" OF THE UNITED STATES FLAG BY ARTHUR MOLE AND JOHN THOMAS. Great Lakes, Illinois: The Great Lakes Recruit, 1917. Patriotic and very rare vintage matte-finish 10-1/4" x 13-1/4" "living photograph" of an American flag with pole by Arthur Mole for Mayhart Studio, with copyright caption below reading: "Great Lakes Recruit 1917, Navy Relief Society Distributors, Photo Mayhart Studio Chicago U.S.A." Taken in November 1917 at the Naval Training Station in Great Lakes, Illinois, this photo depicts a waving American flag composed of around 10,000 U.S. Navy sailors dressed in either white or navy blue uniforms. Matted and framed to an overall size of 14-7/16" x 18-9/16", with a lower plaque reading: "'A Living Flag,' A living flag covering seven acres composed of ten thousand Blue Jackets under command of Captain W. A. Moffett, at the world's greatest Naval Training Station. Great Lakes, Illinois, November, 1917." In fine condition, with light silvering to the darker areas of the image. The picture was made exclusively for the December, 1917 issue of the Great Lakes Recruit. Following are some of the ground dimensions of the flag: there were 250 men in the ball and the ball was 237 feet long; the pole (not including the ball) measured 550 feet in length and required 700 men; the flag itself measured 293 feet in length at the top, 73 feet in length at the bottom, 428 feet in width at the left end and 128 feet in width at the right end; 1600 men were required for the white stripes, 1900 men for the red stripes, 1800 men for the stars and approximately 3400 men for the blue field. All in all, a pretty amazing feat to have pulled this photograph off. No copies located on OCLC/WorldCat. RARE.…
