Paperback. Condición: Good. Dutch Met 'Wat? De Eeuwigheid' beoogde Marguerite Yourcenar haar familietrilogie's Werelds doolhof af te sluiten, waarvan de delen Dierbare nagedachtenis en Archieven uit het Noorden reeds eerder bij Ambo verschenen. Haar dood op 18 december 1987 liet het werk onvoltooid. Nadat in de eerste twee delen de familiegeschiedenis van moeders en vaders kant is geschilderd, speelt het derde deel zich af in de jeugdjaren (1903-1918) van de jonge Marguerite. Toch zou ook hier de term autobiografie misplaatst zijn. Bijna alles wat we over haar te weten komen, is indirect en gekoppeld aan de beschrijving van het leven van haar vader Michel. Hij is, nadat zijn vrouw in het kraambed is gestorven, de centrale figuur in Marguerite's jeugd en eigenlijk de hoofdpersoon in dit laatste deel. Het begin van het boek speelt zich af op de Zwarteberg, het landgoed van de aristocratische familie in het noorden van Frankrijk. Een prominente rol vervult al gauw de Nederlandse Jeanne de Reval, die Michel met zijn dochtertje uitnodigt de gast te zijn van haar en haar gezin in Scheveningen. Tussén haar en Michel ontstaat een warme band, die echter verbroken wordt als eanne kiest voor haar man Egon, wanneer deze in Italië verstrikt raakt in een dubieuze homoseksuele affaire. Ook deze Egon, een creatief avant-gardistisch musicus, die om familieredenen zijn vaderland Estland is ontvlucht, wordt uitvoerig geportretteerd. Het boek eindigt zelfs met zijn vermetele tocht in oorlogstijd naar het door de Roden bezette vaderland. Daarvóór werden de gevolgen beschreven van het uitbreken van de Eerste Wereldoorlog, zowel voor Michel en Marguerite als voor Jeanne en Egon.

De gemaskerde passie" voert Michèle Sarde een denkbeeldige dialoog met Marguerite Yourcenar en reconstrueert ze haar weinig bekende kindertijd en adolescentie, waardoor achter het masker van de strenge schrijfster het vroegrijpe, door haar vader opgevoede kind en de verliefde jonge vrouw zichtbaar worden; Sarde verwerkt daarbij niet eerder gepubliceerde gegevens, tekent een portret van een raadselachtige en tegenstrijdige vrouw, en onderzoekt onder meer haar afkomst, haar zwervend bestaan, haar vrijheid en haar biseksualiteit.

Nummertje aan de achterkant geschreven. Joop Moesman (1909-1988) was een bekende Utrechtse surrealistische schilder. Hij werkte meer dan veertig jaar als lithograaf voor de Nederlandse Spoorwegen. Menu van vijf gangen. Er werd een Cru Cantemerle Côte de Blaye 1973 bij geschonken.
