First American edition of this "haunting tale of quiet intensity" (Review of Contemporary Fiction). Octavo, original half cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "For Philip, avec toute mon amitie Patrick Modiano." Roth first gained attention with the 1959 collection Goodbye, Columbus, which won the National Book Award for Fiction. Ten years later, he published the bestsellerÂPortnoyâs Complaint.ÂNathan Zuckerman, Rothâs literary alter-ego, narrates several of his books. A fictionalized Philip Roth serves as narrator for some of his others, such as the alternate history The Plot Against America, Roth went on to be one of the most honored American writers of his generation.ÂRoth received theÂNational Book Critics CircleÂaward forÂThe Counterlife, the PEN/Faulkner Award for Operation Shylock, The Human Stain and Everyman, a second National Book Award for Sabbathâs Theater, and the Pulitzer Prize for American Pastoral. In 2001, Roth received the inaugural Franz Kafka Prize. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Louise Fili. Translated by Barbara Wright. From the library of Philip Roth. World War II is raging, and Ingrid, who is traveling with her husband, clearly has something to hide. Ingrid's mystery is not rewardingly played out, but Modiano is a wonderfully evocative writer--there's a nice touch of menace throughout, and the cool, collected writing feels like a salve.…

Jacket design by Brian Moore. Translated from the French by Euan Cameron. From the library of Philip Roth. An exceptional association. In 2014, Patrick Modiano was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy cited âthe art of memory with which he has evoked the most ungraspable human destinies and uncovered the life-world of the Occupation,â calling him âa Marcel Proust of our time.â "Modiano is an ideal writer to gorge on . in part because [his books] make up a system as beguiling and complete as any in contemporary literature . [So You Don't Get Lost in the Neighborhood] set[s] up a moody, delectable noir" (The New Yorker). …
