In those days of practically universal education, the Dictionary had become as necessary for the needs of the mind as bread is for those of the body. The special features of this dictionary are: It contains the words of the English language in ordinary use, together with many new words which have recently come into use. The words are conveniently divided into syllables, in the manner employed by the best writers. The proper use of capitals and small letters in writing is indicated by the capitalization of the initial letter of all proper nouns. The pronunciation of each word is shown by a clear and properly accented system of phonetic spelling. The definitions are accurate, embracing the recent distinctions and shades of meaning. Each word and its derivatives are specially indexed, the derivatives not being crowded in with the definitions, as is often done to save space, but with a loss of clearness and utility. The synonyms and antonyms are given in connection with the words themselves, instead of the less convenient method of placing them in a separate list in the appendix. A clear-faced type, alike for words and definitions, is employed, an expedient being used which permits the words to be unusually close and full in size. An appendix is given containing lists of foreign words and phrases, abbreviations, and grammatical information of much utility to the student. The page edges are red. Several handwritten names appear on the 2nd page. The two black pages in the front show fading. There is tanning throughout. There is a corner fold on p. 334. Back spine loosened from board but not entirely. All text is readable. It measures 7"x4-1/2". Rules for Punctuation appears at the back of the book along with Correct English, Forms of Address, Abbreviations Used in Writing and Printing, Dictionary of Foreign Words, Phrases, Colloquialisms, Provers, and Quotations.
