Ross, The derelict day. Poems in Germany. Londres 1947. Edition originale.

Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Poor. John Minton Ilustrador. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression, in the first state binding, presented in the John Minton designed unclipped dust wrapper. Bound in yellow cloth, gilt lettering to green spine. The wrapper is in two pieces, with jagged tears running through the spine and front joint. There is some loss around the splitting, including most noticeably to the head of the spine. Some closed nicks to the top edge of the panels, with some creasing and losses at the extremities. It is a touch toned with the odd spot. The book itself is a little bumped and faded at the spine ends, the extremities similarly; the cloth remains generally bright. The hinges are a touch loose, but the binding is otherwise firm. The fore edge and the prelims are a little spotted. The leaves are a smidge age-toned towards the edges, else generally bright. A smart first impression and first state example with the dust wrapper in need of sympathetic restoration.

Añadir al carritoFirst Edition, first printing. 189 pages. Publisher's yellow cloth with green titles to the backstrip. With the striking dust-jacket by English draughtsman-artist John Minton, with the first state price of 21s printed at bottom of the front flap. Over 50 illustrations by Minton including many full-page examples and eight in colour. Untorn jacket has just some light rubbing to ends of the backstrip to detract. A fine copy. That is Alan Ross describing Corsica in 1947 which he and the artist John Minton visited, in the footsteps of Edward Lear, expressly to write this book. Although admitting, perhaps too modestly, to the influence of Graham Greene's The Lawless Roads and Journey Without Maps and therefore 'too inclined to see Corsica in terms of defeated priests, corrupt politicians and saintly monks' he wrote one of the best travel books since the Second World War. It is, in fact, a collaboration between a gifted writer and the most romantic artist of his generation, and, in its own lesser way, it played a part, alongside the early Elizabeth Davids (also illustrated by John Minton), of reminding drab, grey, post-war Britain of a warmer, sunnier, more colourful alternative: the Mediterranean. Book.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (first printing), in the first issue binding of buckram, blocked in green at the backstrip with gilt lettering and decoration. Tall 8vo. xiv, 189pp. Minton contributes a frontispiece, a title page decoration, eight full-page colour plates, 42 full-page black and white plates, and 39 further black and white tail-pieces and drawings in the text. A touch of light occasional blemishing to the cloth. The free endpapers lightly spotted, and with some further very light spotting to the reverse of the colour plate leaves, but with none of the images or text block impacted. Very good indeed in the magnificent double-spread pictorial colour dust wrapper, non-price-clipped (21s. net), but with a touch of wear to the head of the spine panel and to several corner tips resulting in several miniscule fractional of loss. A superbly preserved example.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. The First UK printing published by John Lehmann, London in 1948. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. Original publisher's yellow buckram boards with green titling and decoration to the spine. This is the second state binding of the first printing (The first state had the binding of yellow buckram stamped in green and gilt on the spine). Some light pushing at the spine ends and mild bumping to the lower front corners. Internally clean. The fragile WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ condition. Light edge-wear at the spine ends and corners. A few small closed tears and a little toning to the spine and flap edges. Some very superficial rubbed areas to the spine and a very tiny area of loss to the front flap fold, which are barely discernible. The wraparound wrapper artwork by John Minton looks striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. 8 colour plates, and over 50 black and white drawings, mainly full-page, by John Minton. Alan Ross and John Minton's artistic collaboration and ode to the island of Corsica. Ross and Minton were commissioned by the publisher John Lehmann to travel to Corsica and put together a book of words and images. They visited the island in the post-war summer of 1947. The resulting travelogue contains history, descriptions, impressions, maps, stories, poems and illustrations. Minton's Neo-Romantic illustrations perfectly capture the heat and spirit of the island and the book is arguably his most successful and influential illustrated work. The title comes from the Louis MacNeice line - 'Time was away and somewhere else.' [Spalding, Frances. John Minton. Dance Till The Stars Come Down. 2005. p. 109-14.]. One of the nicest copies that we have handled to date and now increasingly elusive in collectible condition. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
