Añadir al carritoFirst edition, first printing, association copy of this volume entitled Shuuf ("Look!" in Arabic), commemorating life on board the USS Maury (AGS-16) in the Arabian Gulf, inscribed by the ship's commander, C. J. Heath on the front free endpaper, to "Capt. Vic Moiteret, Best wishes from everyone on Maury, C. J. Heath". An accompanying letter addressed to "Vic" - presumably Moiteret - asks for his help in publishing the book: "I hate to saddle you with this but I know you are interested in printing and would be the one most likely to know how to get it done. We are pressed for time and have no information on printing and publishing companies. Maybe you could get it done in Hydro [Hydrographic Survey] or through some BuPers [Bureau of Naval Personnel] channels. We think it should have a definite recruiting or P.I.O. value". The letter goes on to give instructions to the printers and layout artists. The volume presents photographs, cartoons and text documenting the different departments of the vessel, including engineering, operations and supply. There are formal images of the entire crew, as well as more informal pictures showing the operations of the Hydrographic Survey. A limited number of photographs show non-American officials, including the Amir of Ras Mishab and the British political resident, Sir Rupert Hays. USS Maury was a hydrographic surveying ship which did three eight-month stints in the Gulf from 1949 until 1951. Victor Moiteret was awarded the Silver Star for his gallantry during the Second Battle of the Philippine Sea, when he remained on board the U.S.S. Princeton for seven hours as Japanese forces bombed the ship. Commander C. J. Heath was remembered by those who served under him on the Maury as tough but competent. Ltjg Richard Wilcox recalled that Heath "created a focal point to hold long and boring cruises together. Each officer was to carry a notebook at all times and we were expected to write down each time he found something that needed to be corrected" (USS Maury AGS-16 Association). Quarto. Profusely illustrated in text with photographs and cartoons by Sal Fonseca. Original illustrated paper over boards, front cover lettered in red. Accompanied by a 4-page letter typed on carbon paper, marked "copy" at head, wire-stitched in top left corner. A touch rubbed, with minor soiling. Letter toned, with closed short tears to fore edges. A very good copy.
