Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. In Ashton, a town in the deep South, an elderly Negro walked into the courthouse one day and made a simple request. He wanted to register to vote. At first the clerk was confused. Never before in the history of Ashton had a Negro displayed such arrogance. He tried to discourage the Negro, but the old man was adamant. A few days later they pulled the Negro's body from the river, with a gaping wound in his head. In Ashton this incident would have gone practically unnoticed only a few years earlier. But that time was past. Phil Arrow, a young newspaperman, demanded a full measure of justice from the people of Ashton. Through his efforts, the attention of the world became focused on the crime. Phil had returned to Ashton, after spending six years in the North, because of a simple longing to live once more among his own people. Then they murdered the old Negro who wanted to vote, ad the Southern Way of Life became suddenly an ugly, vicious mask covering the faces of people who ignored or condoned the crime. In his efforts to learn the truth, Phil was balked and frustrated at every turn. His best friend, a lawyer, elected to defend the men suspected of the murder. The trial became a contest, not between the state and the murderers, but between those who would preserve an archaic way of life and any person or idea menacing their traditions. Phil Arrow was torn between his loyalty to his friends and neighbors and his need to denounce them for he violence of their prejudices. Before his ordeal ended, he found a measure of understanding and support from unexpected quarters. Jay Milner has lived and worked in the South for most of his life. A native of Texas, he obtained his B.A. and M.A. degrees at Mississippi Southern College. For two years he coached football and taught English at a southern school. Then for a while he drove a gasoline truck in the red clay hills of southern Mississippi. In 1952 Mr. Milner began his newspaper career, working on papers in he South, including a two-year stint as managing editor on Hodding Carter's "Delta Democrat Times". He covered gubernatorial and senatorial races, and was assigned to report on many of the major racial incidents that have occurred in the South in recent years. There is a name label of the previous owner and year on the front board. The book jacket has tears. There is foxing on the inner boards and first and last pages. The pages are free of any markings and highlighting. The book weighs 1 lb 0.8 oz.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Unstated 1st Edition. Author's first novel. About an elderly African American who was killed when he tried to register to vote in the deep South - and the newspaper reporter who wouldn't look away. (Author was a news reporter at the Delta Democrat-Times and the New York Herald Tribune.) No printing notation on last page to indicate which printing this is, but dust jacket is 8/61 with price of $4.95 intact. Book appears to be in unread condition with a little wrinkling to spine top and bottom edges only. Otherwise very lovely copy. The dust jacket has several edge tears and shallow chip wear to extremities with mild overall shelf wear. Looks better than it sounds.
