J, Lawrence Publishers, 1903. First edition. Octavo, pp. [1-8] 9-163 [164: blank]. Original pictorial green cloth, front panel stamped in black and gold, spine panel in black. Illustrated with numerous line drawings (by the author) in the text. A fair copy only of this rare book. #1469. $45. Smith M-816. An amateurishly written short novel about two friends who settle into an apparently haunted house. This is eventually rationalized -- but in an unusual manner that preserves some of the uncanny atmosphere of the tale. The "ghosts" turn out to be a mother and daughter: the former is insane and believes herself to be a ghost; the dutiful daughter is beautiful and waiting for the happy ending, which comes in due course. The men have a black servant, George Washington Johnson, who (theoretically) provides comic relief with his inordinate fear of "haunts." The illustrations are sometimes charming, and generally show more verve than the writing. Crackpot American Gothic. Probably a vanity publication. Smith lists only this title for the publisher.
