Paperback. Condición: Good. A journey on the edge of now and eternity where every moment counts . . . what one couple discovers will make your own life shine. Jeanne Selander and Fred Miller had been married less than five years and were deeply entrenched in family life with their infant daughter and precocious four-year-old son when Fred was diagnosed with a terminal illness. His doctors gave him just three months to live. Instead of giving into fear, they chose to live each day in an unrestrained pursuit of life and love. What they discovered during the eight years that Fred survived gives us luminous insights into love and life and the spirit as they learned to live in the present and not to give away the precious moments of this life. This is an uplifting story of a courageous journey where love truly knows no bounds. Along with this couple we experience great joys and great sadness, the healing power of laughter and the amazing strengths of the human spirit. The lessons of love and loss are universal and speak to all of us How do you live fearlessly, joyfully and fully in the face of death? What awaits us beyond this life? How do you love someone so deeply . . . and yet learn to let them go.…

Hardback. Condición: Good. Meet the lovable but dysfunctional Lake family over the four days that will make or break them When Vance Lake--broke, jobless, and recently dumped--takes refuge with twin brother Craig back home on Cape Cod, he unwittingly finds himself smack in the middle of a crisis that would test the bonds of even the most cohesive family, let alone the Lakes. Craig is strangely mournful and angry at equal turns. His exasperated wife, Gina, is on the brink of an affair. At the center of it all is seventeen-year-old Amanda: adored niece, rebellious daughter, and stubborn stepdaughter. She's also pregnant. Told in alternating points of view by each member of this colorful New England clan, and infused with the quiet charm of the Cape in the off-season, The News from the End of the World follows one family into a crucible of pent-up resentments, old and new secrets, and memories long buried. Only by coming to terms with their pasts, both separately and together, do they stand a chance of emerging intact.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Poetry. African & African American Studies. Soon after the 2016 presidential election, Sixteen Rivers Press, a shared-work collective of Northern California poets, conducted a nationally advertised call for submissions, seeking unpublished poems that would respond to the cultural, moral, and political rifts that now divide our country: poems of resistance and resilience, witness and vision, that embody what it means to be a citizen in a time when our democracy is threatened. In a matter of weeks, the press received over two thousand poems. The work came from across the country, from red states and blue states, high schools and nursing homes, big cities and small towns. At the same time, the poet-members of the press were asked to nominate poems. These poems could be old or new, published or not, the poets living or dead--anything from anywhere that spoke to this moment in the voice of poetry. In this way, we gathered another three hundred poems, ranging from Virgil and Dante to Claudia Rankine and Mai Der Vang, from Milton to Merwin, from Bai Juyi to last Thursday's just-posted Poem-a-Day. This anthology is a blend of poems from these two sources, each of its nine sections a kind of town-hall meeting where citizen-poets gather to raise their voices, now raucous, now muted, now lyric, now plain: voices responding with dissent and consoling with praise, perspective, vision, and hope. Around 1950, Pablo Neruda wrote the poem, Am rica, I do not call your name without hope to a Latin America in crisis. In this anthology, Dean Rader's poem, in the spirit of Neruda but in the time of Trump, speaks, under the same title, to our America: this is for you and your fear, your tar; / for the white heat in your skin and / for your blue bones that one day may sing. The title of our book echoes this cry: America, listen to what your poets are saying. Are we the corrosive, racist, authoritarian regime that the 2016 election brought to power, or are we a democracy, that fragile, imperfect form of government that must be constantly guarded in the struggle for equality, justice and freedom? In resistance and resilience, and not without hope, America, we call your name.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. "This one's a winner." --People   Vance Lake is broke, jobless, and recently dumped. Taking refuge with his twin brother, Craig, on Cape Cod, he unwittingly finds himself in the middle of a crisis that would test even the most cohesive family, let alone the Lakes. Seventeen-year-old Amanda is pregnant. Craig is heartbroken and full of rage; his exasperated wife, Gina, is on the brink of an affair; and Amanda is indignant, ashamed, and very, very scared. Told in alternating points of view by each member of this colorful New England clan, and infused with the quiet charm of the Cape in the off-season, The News from the End of the World follows one family into a crucible of pent-up resentments, old and new secrets, and memories long buried. Only by coming to terms with their pasts, as individuals and together, do they stand a chance of emerging intact.   "My favorite kind of book, bighearted and full of complicated flawed characters stumbling through love and life, making hard choices, making mistakes, and making the reader fall in love with every one of them. I loved this novel!" -- Ann Hood, author of The Book That Matters Most   "With wonderfully crafted characters and expert pacing, Miller has written the kind of narrative that readers crave: a beautifully written, hard-to-put-down story that will stay long after the book has been closed." -- Booklist &nbsp. …
