XX [Bing] Fort Michilimackinac was an 18th-century French and later British fort and trading post located at the Straits of Mackinac. It was built around 1715 and abandoned in 1783. The fort served as a supply depot for traders in the western Great Lakes. The French had first established a presence in the Straits of Mackinac in 1671 when Father Marquette established the Jesuit St. Ignace Mission at present-day St. Ignace in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The fort was located along the Straits, which connect Lake Huron and Lake Michigan of the Great Lakes of North America. The present-day village of Mackinaw City developed around the site of the fort, which has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. It is preserved as an open-air historical museum, with several reconstructed wooden buildings and palisade, and is now part of Fort Michilimackinac State Park.

Libro
Soft cover. Condición: Near Fine. b&w Photos Ilustrador. Near fine condition From the Foreword: In 1974 Dr. and Mrs. Arthur Mourot put on loan at the Virginia Museum the collection ofMeissen porcelain catalogued in the following pages. Over the years since 1974 the Mourots have annually made gifts of individual pieces so that, as of the date of publication, approximately eighty percent of their collection forms part of the Museum's permanent collection. The Mourots have dedicated many years of their lives to collecting Meissen porcelain. Their collection is an eloquent testimonial to the knowledge they have acquired, the taste they have exercised, and the love they have devoted to this field. That the Virginia Museum owned no significant examples ofMeissen before their loan is but one measure of the importance of the Mourot Collection to this institution. The Museum is indebted to J. Jefferson Miller II, Curator Emeritus of Ceramics at the National Museum of American History, and an authority on Meissen porcelain of international note, for agreeing to undertake the writing of the catalogue. All those members of the Museum staff who came in contact with him during the project George Cruger and Monica Hamm for editing; Raymond Geary for design and production; Ronald Jennings, Dennis McWaters, and Lisa Gumming for photography; Lisa Hummel and her Registration Division stafF all of us have found our association a very rewarding one. Above all, we are also most grateful to the Council of the Virginia Museum for providing funds for the production of this catalogue. Pinkey L. Near Chief Curator Virginia Museum.
