Helyg - the Climbers' Club cottage in the Ogwen valley (near Capel Curig, North Wales) was the first successful climbers' hut in Britain. After its discovery by Herbert Carr ( author of the classic Mountains of Snowdonia 1926) the eventual opening in 1925 was a momentous occasion for British climbing - although at the time its importance was not appreciated. For over twenty years after the opening, the leading rock-climbers of the day explored the cliffs of North Wales using Helyg as a base and sixty years later many of the older climbers of today still regard Helyg with great affection and nostalgia.
