Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. A pioneering aviator and advocate of women's equality, Amelia Earhart was, and continues to be, an inspiration to people the world over. Her fierce determination to break records and push the boundaries of aviation led her to become the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1932, as well as the first person (man or woman) to fly solo the trans-Pacific flight from Hawaii to California in 1935. Not content to leave it at that, Amelia set her sights on becoming the first woman to circumnavigate the world, but her brave attempt was cut short when she and her navigator, Fred Noonan, vanished over the Pacific Ocean on the final stretch of the challenge in 1937. Eighty years on and our fascination with Amelia Earhart continues. Here, Mike Roussel charts her life and experiences, exploring the investigations and theories surrounding her mysterious disappearance and revealing the naturally courageous spirit that made her one of the most daring of twentieth-century women.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. The brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright were fascinated by human flight. Their first powered airplane, 'The Wright Flyer', was tested at Kitty Hawk in 1903. Wilbur's first flight was on 14 December 1903 but stalled and crashed. Three days later, after repairs, Orville flew to 540ft and landed safely after 12 seconds: the first powered flight in aviation history. Fearing competition, the brothers declined to demonstrate for the US Army, travelling to France in 1908 to prove their aircraft to be far superior to their European competitors. A tragedy soon followed when a passenger died in a crash, but the brothers persevered, working together until in 1912 when Wilbur died from typhoid. Orville sold the Wright Company in 1915, devoting his time to research until he died at the age of 76. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Amelia took her first flight as a passenger at an air show and that 10-minute experience sealed her future career. In 1921 she purchased her first aircraft, bright yellow, which she nicknamed the 'Canary'. She later sold it because it seemed unlikely she could make a living from flying, but in 1928 Amelia was invited to become the first woman to fly the Atlantic, following Charles Lindberg's solo transatlantic flight from in 1927. She jumped at the chance, though she was forced to travel as a passenger, and this established 'Lady Lindy' in the public eye. Soon she returned to flying, and setting her own records on her own terms. Her final flight was at attempt to circumnavigate the world, but US coastal vessel Ithaca lost radio contact with the plane 100 miles out from Howloon Island and searches yielded no trace of them. AUTHOR: Mike Roussel has previously written Joe Smith: Spitfire's Forgotten Designer for The History Press, as well as co-authoring Shipwrecks of the Cunard Line and The Union Castle Line. He is an active supporter of Solent Sky Aviation Museum. He lives in Southampton. SELLING POINTS: . Timed for the 80th anniversary of her tragic disappearance on 2 July 1937 . With a foreword by Joy Lofthouse, ex-Second World War ATA pilot . Charting Earhart's life and experiences until she vanished over the Pacific on the last leg of her Round the World Flight . Exploring the theories and investigations that have followed, as the world struggled to establish the truth . In recent years tiny remnants have been found, from aircraft fragments to freckle cream, but it is unlikely the mystery of what happened to Amelia Earhart will ever be solved 50 b/w illustrations Revealing the naturally courageous nature of 'Lady Lindy', that made her one of the most daring of twentieth-century women Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
