To thi…s I would now like to add that Abingdon has such a rich medieval history that it has been very difficult to fit it into a small, easy-to-read book. Because of the wealth of material, much has been left out or relegated to the references, in the hope that future historians will continue the work. Medieval Abingdon' contains material which has not been published before as well as much that has appeared in books which have long been out of print, including my Abingdon Abbey to Borough' (1974). Those who have read that little book will recognise some of its text and Elizabeth Ansell's delightful pictures. I remain deeply indebted to Arthur E. Preston and Agnes C. Baker, whose numerous files at the Berkshire Record Office, Reading, are a mine of information on almost all aspects of Abingdon history.
