Eleven adventures of The Escapist, styled as "the great lost superhero of the Golden Age," but in fact entirely an invention of Chabon, in the form of the character originated by the protagonists of his 2000 novel "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay." This volume, the first fully-featured expression of this metafictional conceit, contains, in addition to the individual episodes themselves, several faux-historical articles and essays, beginning with Chabon's own "reminiscence" of his "discovery" of the character in 1968, following by his investigation into the history of "The Golden Age Escapist," which had supposedly been published from 1940 to 1954. The longest of these interstitial pieces is Malchi B. Cohen's 6-page "Escapism 101," which presents a detailed (but entirely made-up) history of the character's genesis and development from the 1940s to the 1990s.
