Un des plus beaux illustrés romantiques, la matière en est abondante et foisonnante, pleine d'imagination et de verve. Ce volume est surtout l'une des principales oeuvres de Trimolet comme illustrateur, dont Baudelaire dresse particulièrement l'éloge dans ses Curiosités esthétiques, au chapitre des Caricaturistes.
