These are the papers that introduced what's now universally known as the Mermin-Wagner theorem, one of the most important an…d most-cited results in statistical mechanics and condensed matter physics. It proves that continuous symmetries cannot be spontaneously broken at any finite temperature in one- or two-dimensional systems with sufficiently short-range interactions meaning true long-range magnetic order (ferromagnetism or antiferromagnetism) simply cannot exist in 1D or 2D isotropic Heisenberg models, no matter how cold the system gets (short of absolute zero). Long-wavelength thermal fluctuations always win and destroy the order. Mermin and Wagner set a hard mathematical limit on what kinds of phase transitions are even possible in low-dimensional systems, correcting earlier assumptions that magnetic ordering should behave similarly in 2D as in 3D. It also became the seed of a major later development the apparent tension between this theorem and evidence of 2D ordering (like crystallization or superfluidity) helped motivate the theory of topological phase transitions developed by Kosterlitz and Thouless, work that won the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics. The theorem is still routinely invoked today across magnetism, superconductivity, and even studies of Bose-Einstein condensates in reduced dimensions.
