This realist novel of historical fiction is based upon a real event: the 1906 murder of Grace Brown by Chester Gillette in upstate New York, his trial, conviction and execution in 1908 by the electric chair. The author examines the life of the murderer to expose the innate flaws that led to the crime. The 1951 film A Place in the Sun, starring Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor and Shelley Winters is based on the novel. The book was banned in Boston in 1927 due to sexual content, abortion, and murder.
