Of Jabotinsky, a man he knew intimately, Menachem Begin said "He wrote of Jewish strength before it came into being; of revolt before it took place; of a Jewish Army while its weapons were still a dream; of a Jewish State when many of our contemporaries still derided its very mention and of 'Hadar' (honour, respect) while the manners - or lack of them - of the Ghetto still prevailed in our people. Not many were privileged to know Jabotinsky as [the author] did. Therefore, anyone who wants to study the history of Jabotinsky's struggle for the redemption of the Jewish People, for the renewal of its strength, for the liberation of its Land, for the re-creation of its independent State, should read this unique biography of Ze'ev Japotinsky." - dust jacket. Schectman, Rebel and Statesman and Fighter and Prophet, constitutes the definitive biography of Vladimir (Ze'ev) Jabotinsky. Many histories call Jabotinsky a great Jewish patriot and statesman, but to others he was an amoral terrorist. A man whose memory commands both reverent loyalty and fierce hatred at the same time, he is most certainly one of the giants of modern Jewish history, and one whose life story reads like a history of the creation of the State of Israel."
