PROLIFICALLY ILLUSTRATED in full-color and black-and-white photography (many full-page) with accompanying descriptive captions. "Photographer James Rudnick moved to Brooklyn, New York in 1977 and almost immediately began to document two nearby landmarks: the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge. As preparations commenced for the centennials of these magnificent structures-in 1983 and 1986-Rudnick was drawn to the restorations, spending countless hours suspended above the bridge's cables or hidden within the statue's wrought-iron armature to record the intricate process of rebuilding and refinishing. In the late 1980s and the 1990s, he turned his camera on the renovations of two more of New York's grand places: the New York Public Library and Grand Central Terminal." 184 pages. "Gotham Restored: The Preservation of Monumental New York" gathers more than 150 of Rudnick's photographs-from close studies of dedicated conservators at work to vertigo-inducing panoramas taken high in ceilings or atop towers-into a unique exploration of the great architecture of New York. The comprehensive portfolios not only present compelling evidence of the vital importance of historic preservation but also lovingly portray four masterpieces that represent the American character nationally and internationally, four architectural icons that are integral parts of and outstanding works in the spectacular cityscape of New York." NOTE: Due to the size and weight of the book additional shipping cost will be requested/required for EXPEDITED and OUT-OF-U.S. shipment. GI2.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Used - Very Good. James Rudnick moved to Brooklyn, New York, in 1977 to attend graduate school and almost immediately began to photograph two nearby landmarks: the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge. Both structures were approaching their centennials, and Rudnick was soon drawn into the resulting restorations as a documentary photographer. He followed this work, in the 1980s and 1990s, with similar projects at the New York Public Library and Grand Central Terminal. These four monuments are emblems of America's transformation at the end of the nineteenth century and, more particularly, of New York City. Rudnick's photographs -- both color and black-and-white -- are a unique exploration of the great architecture of New York, from 'before' shots showing sadly ignored structures to fascinating in-progress images of craftspeople and techniques to spectacular views of the gleaming, post-restoration monuments. Accompanying the photographs in this beautifully designed volume is text by Thomas Mellins that discusses the history of New York City, notably the period from 1865 to 1915 in which the four landmarks were built, as well as the development of the city's historic preservation movement, both popular and institutional. Rudnick himself describes the details of each restoration in informative captions; his evocative afterword beautifully recounts his own engagement with the spectacular architectural legacy of New York. Rear cover nicked on bottom edge. Black remainder mark covered with white-out.

Añadir al carritoHardback. Condición: New. Founded in 1941, SLCE has continued to set new standards for producing buildings that inform and enhance urban environments worldwide. This book delves into the story of this progression across 75 years, highlighting SLCE's outstanding contribution to the New York and tri-state area in architectural design and property development as well as the logistics surrounding construction. With demonstrated mastery across residential, mixed-use and commercial developments, as well as healthcare facilities, restoration and affordable housing, SLCE understands the full spectrum of urban life and consistently delivers buildings that answer to the city's complex needs. While seeing each project through to successful, timely completion, the firm has also pioneered more efficient, user-friendly amendments to New York planning law, zoning issues and air rights. In a comprehensive essay following an introduction by the practice leaders, curator and writer Thomas Mellins contextualises SLCE's pivotal role in developing some of New York's most distinguished buildings in collaboration with internationally renowned practices, including the Blue Tower with Bernard Tschumi, the Bloomberg Tower with Cesar Pelli, VIA 57 West with BIG, 520 Park Avenue with Robert AM Stern and the University Center at The New School with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, as well as full-service projects including the German Mission to the United Nations, Gotham West, the POD Hotel and ELEMENT.SLCE's complete story unfolds elegantly across three sections. The book begins with an in-depth look at a curated selection of SLCE's main projects, followed by a shortlist of single-page features, and ends with a comprehensive longlist of the practice's projects. While SLCE s prolific contribution to New York s built identity and culture cannot be overstated, this is the first book to fully cover the extent of this 75-year practice.
