"When I visited Abu Ghraib for the first time, scouting potential prison faciilities in July 2003, my reaction was visceral: You gotta be kidding. We drove west along the main supply route from Baghdad. The prison gate, about 100 yards off the road, was all but unreachable. Our most experienced driver tried to navigate the rubble and concrete, ruts and ditches that blocked our way, past the crater where a roadside bomb had blown the rear wheels off a 5-ton truck. We finally gave up and walked the last few yards, assured that the mines had been cleared. The dynamic young company commander in charge, Captain Todd Armstrong, was all fired up, offering me a "tour of the prison facility" as we stood together in ankle-deep debris. "Do I have any prison facilities here?" I asked him. "We will," he assured me, "or that's the plan." - from the rear outer jacket. "When Janis Karpinski first saw the photos of abuse at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, she felt the walls of her Baghdad office closing in on her. She recognized that the soldiers shown grinning over the naked, cowering Iraqi detainees served under her command. Military justice already had swept up the seven MPs charged in the abuse case - and Karpinski soon learned that the system was about to turn on her. Here is the inside story of the first female general ever to command troops in a combat zone, and of how the scandal destroyed her career. It traces the rise of a groundbreaking woman from the Republican suburbs of New Jersey to a commanding position in a man's army. Karpinski earned her general's insignia as a master parachutist, recipient of the Bronze Star in the first Gulf war, and as the leader chosen for a special mission to train Arab women as a fighting force in the Middle East. In Iraq, Karpinski and her 3,400 U.S. soldiers faced the biggest challenge of all: rebuilding a civilian prison system left in shambles by Saddam Hussein. She describes the ordeal of serving in a violent landscape populated by U.S. commanders flailing at a growing insurgency, and by the specter of the captive Saddam, who showed surprise at meeting a female general and refused to believe that Karpinski could be in charge of his incarceration. In the end, Karpinski accepts her share of responsibility for the abuses, but raises a larger question: why was she the most prominent target of the investigations?" - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

Añadir al carritoBuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The point of departure for this volume is the work of the Austrian Brazilian critic Roberto Schwarz on literature and culture. Since the 1970s, both his essayistic and dramatic writings have been impacting radical debates that transcend national and disciplinary borders. His international interlocutors include Beatriz Sarlo, Fredric Jameson, Franco Moretti, Susan Sontag, among many others. In this volume, scholars from various contexts discuss Schwarz's critical legacy, approaching it with new perspectives and relating it to different research objects. The topics addressed range from literature to issues of sociology, theory, translation, politics, etc. Despite the variety of themes, the contributions are interrelated by their common background: the Schwarzian approach. In particular, this volume reflects the radicality of a perspective which, through the formal analysis of, for example, a novel, achieves to shed light on sociohistorical dynamics not evident until then. Especially in an intellectual scenario that is increasingly interested in the decentralization of thought and therefore in understanding global power relations in the culture, this volume is a unique contribution to the international critical debate.
