Born in London in 1928, Tilson worked as a carpenter and joiner. After National Service in the RAF, he studied at St. Martin's School of Art and the Royal College of Art. He has taught at important art schools in London, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, New York and Hamburg, and is a popular exhibitor at the Royal Academy's annual Summer Exhibition. Mel Gooding (1941-2021) was an art historian, art critic, curator and lecturer, and founder of Knife Edge Press. Gavin Turk (1967 -) is a British artist and one of the group known as the Young British Artists.
