Añadir al carrito117pp., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper; in contemporary worn vellum binding, with metal clasp, with marbled endpapers. Two sequences of receipts, starting at different ends of the volume, one (rather more businesslike) later than the other. In addition to the total of 117pp. of receipts, each of the two sequences has its own thumb index. Both sequences are written out in medical Latin, with notes in English (for example, after the recipe for 'Cement for Electrical Machines': 'Melt the Resin & Wax together then add the ochre & Plaster paris previously dried, powdered & mixed'). The earlier sequence covers 55pp and in addition to titles in Latin includes recipes for 'Tooth Powder', 'Hair Oil', 'Cough Syrup', 'Horse Medicines', 'Blistering Ointment', 'Ointment for Blemish', 'Lip Salve', 'Scent for Jars', 'Cow Drench', 'Amalgam', 'Blacking', 'Russells Pills', 'Cold Cream', 'Marking Ink', 'Ginger Beer', 'Beet Top Liquid', 'Soda Powders', 'Pungent Scent', 'Mange Ointment', 'Lotion for Bugs', 'Godfreys Cordial', 'Liniment for Sprains in Horses', 'Liquid for Brass', 'Goulard Ointment', 'Salt Lemon', 'French Polish', 'Composition for Balloons', 'Mastic Varnish', 'Almond Paste', 'Steel Preserver', 'Water Proof India Rubber Polish', 'For Browning Gun Barrels', 'Tooth Ache Drops', 'Powder for Wounds & cracked Heels', 'Pomade', 'Black Ink'. The second sequence covers 62pp., and is somewhat more serious, with the few headings including 'Syphilis', 'Mixture for Rheumatism' and 'Stimulating Liniment' (but also entry for 'Currie Powder', dated 1848), section entitled "Medicine for children", c.24pp. (including an ascription to Astley Cooper, a treatment for "gravel"), whooping cough, 'after scarlatina', ''for the head', 'Apply with a camel hair pencil', diarrhoea & dyspepsia', etc. etc. Description of treatment for 'Hooping Cough' begins: 'To a child one year old, give one grain of finely pulverized alum 3 times a day, upon an empty stomach in a little sugar & water till the Cough is removed which it usually is in a fortnight. | To a Child two years old give 2 grains each dose & so increasing one grain for every year but not exceeding 20 or 25 grains for each dose for an Adult. | Milk diet except in case of Infants to be avoided as much as possible & attention to be paid to the state of the bowels.' Very few clues to the author's identity. Occasional references include: 'Mrs Foot', 'Mrs. O Brien's Child 8 years', 'Dr Collins', 'Dr Reece', 'Dr Barnes' and 'Dr Greville'. Three cuttings laid down on p.43 of the first sequence: 'Remedy for the Rheumatism, Sprains, or Bruises', 'Ointment for Wounds, Sores of all kinds, and Chilblains', and 'Dr. Blake's remedy for Tooth-ache'. Tipped-in onto an endpaper a printed article relating to 'Maticò, or the Peruvian Styptic'. Note (on medicine for children, perhaps relevant): "Since pediatrics is a modern specialty, dating at best from the mid- or late nineteenth century [.]". This makes the substantial section on 'medicine for children" pioneering.…

Añadir al carritoA medical manuscript featuring lists of sicknesses and remedies copied in an informal freehand likely copied for personal use by a medical practitioner. The paper, binding and overall aesthetic strongly suggest that the manuscript originates from Mughal India, which was under the rule of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb during this period. Single volume, decorated manuscript on paper, in Arabic and Farsi, likely lacking a few leaves at the front, first page in manuscript facsimile, circa 150 leaves, 230 x 160 mm; single column, 21 lines informal freehand, verging on nasta'liq, important words and headings in red throughout, catch-words, some contemporary annotations to margins, some light staining mostly to outer margins; contemporary blind-stamped straight grain limp leather, rebacked and edges repaired, upper and lower edges torn and chipped with loss.…

Añadir al carrito8vo. Ottoman Turkish manuscript, with medical terminology mostly in Arabic. 50 pp. Black (and occasional red) ink on polished paper. 19th century marbled wrappers. A traditional pharmacological essay or pharmacopoeia, as well as a description of several ailments and medical conditions (including earache, infection of the larynx, uvular edema, malaria, jaundice, and yellow fever), with their treatment indications. Interestingly, there is a specific reference to opium ("afyon" in Turkish). The anonymous scribe was very probably a physician or medical practitioner with an imperfect knowledge of Arabic, most likely a Turk. No colophon, but likely written in the early 18th century in an Arabic-speaking Eastern province of the Ottoman Empire. - Occasional stains and smudging; some corner and edge flaws throughout with chipping to wrappers.…

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Manuscript transcription of Yeats's work, bound together with "Lectures on Toxicology given in Jan. 1832 by Mr. J. Wheeler" and a manuscript list of pharmaceutical recipts. 8vo. Modern 1/4 calf. Water in the Brain. together with Lectures on Toxicology given in Jany. 1832 by Mr. J. Wheeler. Together with Pharmaceutical Receipts. London circa 1828. ii; 125; (6); (25)pp. In new 1/ 4 calf. The works by Yeats is a manuscript copy of his work on hydrocephalus which was published in 1823. The paper watermark is 1828 giving an aproximate date of 1828-1830. This work by Yeats is quite rare since there are no copies listed in Osler, Waller or Cushing. Grant David Yeats was born in Florida, educated at Oxford, Edinburgh, and London. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1815, Gulstonian Lecture in 1817, Censor in 1818, Croonian Lecturer in 1827. He was also elected to the Royal Society in 1819. This would appear to be an early work on hydrocephalus with few of the original works even in existance. …

Añadir al carrito8vo. 352 (but: 348) pp. German and Latin manuscript on paper. Some headlines in red. Contemporary blindstamped full calf with floral border and ornaments. All edges red. A trove of more than 450 formulae for various ointments, balms, elixirs, powders, tinctures, pills, essences, potions, and other kinds of medicines, with remarks on their usage and administration. Includes remedies for common diseases including scurvy, gout, gonorrhea, scabies, kidney stones, and even the plague (for which a rather peculiar "plague vinegar" is prescribed, a mixture of wine vinegar, garlic, sage, rosemary, lavender and other herbs). While the manuscript is written in the vernacular, the use of Latin names for the components of the drugs and their complexity point to a professional author, most likely a physician who prepared the book during his studies and used it as a manual in his daily practice. Prepared by one main hand with scattered additions by later owners. - Gifted to the German physician Joseph Höhn, possibly by his teacher Dr. Sauer, upon concluding his studies in 1818. A Joseph Höhn, "surgeon 1st class", is recorded as active in Bamberg, Franconia, in 1838. Notes to both flyleaves state that Höhn later gifted the book to a colleague, the Augsburg physician Johann Anton Mayer. - Spine and corners professionally repaired, interior in fine condition. A very pretty manuscript.…

Añadir al carrito4to (155 x 200 mm). German manuscript in black and brown ink on paper, mainly by two hands. 198 ff. with a total of 323 written pp. Watermark: writhing fish with flower (type Piccard 44418, Braunschweig 1565, but attested in very similar form as early as the mid-15th century in the Münster chronicles, Göttingen, Cod. Ms. hist. 540). Numerous decorative ink initials; one ink illustration (alembic). Contemporary brown calf with blindstamped rules and central ornament to both covers. Traces of ties. Unpublished German therapeutic manual containing a comprehensive body of recipes, owned by a 16th century German gallstone surgeon. - The main part of the manuscript, which paleographial evidence places as early as the 15th century, begins on folio 44r and comprises some 120 closely written leaves in a single hand, entitled: "her noch volget ein bewert artzini bochelein vor ein apostem oder geschwel oder geschwolcz zw erkenn oder waß es sy ussehalb des leibs oder inerhalb zw curirenn und zw heillenn und wi du dich vast zw halltenn". A total of 22 chapters offer extensive recipes, rules of conduct and medicinal instructions, including a section on injuries ("kurtze doch eigentliche underwissung und leer alle wundenn strich un[d] dergelichen verletzung des leibs . zw heilenn und curierenn mit vast schener gruntlicher und bewerter artzini hülff", fol. 60v), a recipe against varices ("recept das bewert ist von denn krampff aderenn", fol. 96r), or a therapy for damaged cranium ("bewert recept gruntlicher cur und heilung der haupt wondenn mit gebrochner oder beschaidigter hern schallen", fol. 112v). This part is also notable for containing a good drawing of an alembic or still (fol. 104v). - Written by the same hand, this is followed by a section on rose and camomile oil as well as other vegetable oils ("olichen"), a recipe against smallpox (fol. 143r ), and knowledge for barber surgeons, including instructions for treating bone fractures (fol. 147 ff.); the end is brought up by numerous assorted recipes for ointments and bandages. - The beginning of the book, written in a different hand apparently in the first third of the 16th century, comprises a brief section on syphilis ("Der rechter artt und brauch die frantzosen zu heilen und zum ersten die holcz ordenung lingnum guiaicum genant", 7 pages) and a surgeon's catechism in 38 questions and answers ("Frag und antwortt ettlicher meister stuck einem jeden so sich der wunt artzeney gebrauchen will nutzlich und nott turfftig zu wissen", 41 pp., ending with "Finis"). - Structured by occasional blank leaves, but apparently complete. The handwriting is fluent and shows few abbreviations, but is not always easily legible. A handwritten ownership on the first page of the volume marks this as the property of "Severus Schöpell", a "Steinn unnd bruch schnide[r]" (a surgeon specialising in the removal of kidney and gall stones), dated "Anno domini 1569". The verso contains a brief recipe for an eye ointment and another early ownership; a torn recipe leaf is loosely inserted at the end. - Binding slightly rubbed with a small hole in the upper cover. Paper a little brownstained or ink-smudged in places, but generally finely preserved. Provenance: Erasmushaus Basel, sale 50 (1975), no. 363 (2000 Swiss Francs).…

Añadir al carrito8vo (170 x 220 mm). English manuscript on paper. 21 pp. on 12 ff. Title on first and repeated on final leaf. Original half calf with marbled covers. Title label to spine. A collection of ca. 55 formulas for various ointments, balms, cataplasms, electuaries, boluses, tinctures, and other kinds of medicines, with remarks on their usage and administration. Though written in the vernacular, the usage of Latin names for the components of the drugs and their complexity point to a professional audience of doctors and pharmacists. The manuscript is compiled from the 2nd edition of Henry Banyer's "Pharmacopoeia Pauperum" from 1721. Banyer (1690-1749) had studied at St Thomas' Hospital in London and practised as a physician at Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. On 30 July 1746 he was admitted extraordinary licentiate of the College of Surgeons. His "Pharmacopoeia Pauperum" was first published in London in 1718 and saw three re-editions until 1739. - Very slight foxing and some browning to the margins. Binding markedly worn. Removed from the Newport Reference Library with their bookplate to the front pastedown.…

Remains of single column up to 32 lines in a tiny early gothic bookhand. Rubrics in pale red, initials in red or blue with contrasting penwork. Fragments from four leaves from a medical treatise discussing diseases and disorders of the stomach. There are entries here on pleurisy, pain in the stomach, vomiting, and on childbirth, as in the medieval tradition this was often grouped with other stomach disorders. - Some scuffs, small holes and discolouration, otherwise in good condition. - 17th-century ownership of Michel Bonniel inscribed to one cutting.…

Añadir al carritoLate 16th to later 17th Century Notebook of Drugs, Home Remedies and Cures [Medical manuscript.] Collection of medicinal formulas, home remedies, cures, etc., written in Italian in multiple cursive hands. [152]ff., including 30 blanks. N.p., later 16th - later 17th century. 164 x 114 mm. 16th century limp vellum, worn, top of spine and back cover damaged. Some dampstaining and soiling throughout, but overall good. This intriguing early medical manuscript may have been a physician's notebook or a collection of household remedies compiled by one or more families; in any case, the notebook was used and added to from the late sixteenth to the late seventeenth centuries. The earliest date we have found in the manuscript is 1563 (on the verso of the third leaf); the latest date we have noted is 1669 (recto of leaf 123). The first several leaves appear to contain a discussion of ulcers and fistulae; a table of contents appears on leaves 40 - 41; and the following several leaves contain a list of materia medica including chamomile, quinine, cinnamon, fenugreek, anise, etc. .…
