Detailed study of 184 coiled and twined baskets woven by 32 Havasupai women of Havasu Canyon, at the western end of the Grand Canyon, during what the authors consider the peak decade of Supai basketmaking. Barbara McKee collected the baskets directly from the makers while her husband, geologist Edwin D. McKee, was Park Naturalist at Grand Canyon National Park, recording each weaver's name and the date of acquisition. Joyce Herold, Curator of Anthropology at the Denver Museum of Natural History, catalogued the collection in 1969, and the three returned to Supai in the early 1970s to interview surviving weavers. Includes a history of Havasupai basketmaking from the old tradition to the 1970s revival; materials, dyes and techniques of twining and coiling; design motifs; and illustrated biographies of the individual basketmakers with photographs of them and their dated baskets. The jacket notes the collection was to be deposited at the Museum of Northern Arizona. Contents: Illustrations; Baskets listed according to makers; Acknowledgments; Introduction; The History of Havasupai Basketmaking; The Process of Basketmaking; Basket Designs; Basketmakers represented in this collection; Scale of Photographs; The Basketmakers and Their Baskets; Utilitarian Baskets; Unidentified Baskets; Selected References.
