Paperback. Condición: Good. It is widely known that Charles Dickens gave public readings of his works, and that those readings were enormously popular. Far less well known are the stories themselves; these were not, as is the modern fashion, taken verbatim from the published novels. Instead, Dickens trimmed, reworded, and re-shaped material from the novels to create stories that would be self-contained artistic entities. These concise "performance fictions," shaped in every way to be accessible to a broad audience, are in many ways an ideal introduction to Dickens's work for the modern reader. Four of the most successful of these short works have been selected for this volume, including "The Story of Little Dombey" (perhaps the most emotionally affecting of all the readings, and described by Dickens as his "greatest triumph everywhere") and the violent and suspenseful "Sikes and Nancy" (Dickens's overpowering performances of which were said to have contributed to his death). Provided in the contextual materials is a selection of reviews and contemporary descriptions that comment on Dickens's manner of performance and audience reception. A brief excerpt from Dombey and Son is also included, illustrating the extensive revision process that led to "The Story of Little Dombey.".…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. This volume includes the text of Twelfth Nightas prepared and annotated by David Swain for The Broadview Anthology of British Literature, and is accompanied by the excellent introduction and supplementary materials from the anthology. The diverse and extensive appendices acquaint readers with Shakespeare's sources and contextualize the play within Elizabethan society. The appendices include an excerpt from Barnabe Riche's "Of Apollonius and Silla," Shakespeare's primary source of inspiration for the play; selections from Galen, Plato, and others illustrating Elizabethan attitudes toward gender and sexuality; excerptions illuminating contemporary moral discomfort with the theatre, such as Philip Stubbes's "Of Stage-plays and Interludes, with their wickedness"; and pieces on music and duelling that illustrate cultural conventions important to the interpretation of Twelfth Night. This is one of several Broadview Anthology of British LiteratureEditions being released this year; those wishing to teach the text will have the option of including the convenient stand-alone book as part of a specially-priced shrink-wrapped package together with a volume of the anthology.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. The poets whom we call the Romantics - Wordsworth, Coleridge, Burns and Blake, Byron, Shelley, and Keats - belonged to an age that saw many other kinds of poetry written and published. In this new anthology, Jerome McGann explores the full range of verse that was published in Britain between the years 1785 and 1832. Selections from all the major and minor Romantic poets are included, as well as important political and satiric verse of the period, the continuing tradition of sentimental' verse, regional and dialect verse, and verse in translation. Organizing his material by date of first appearance, and not by author grouping, Professor McGann calls attention to the historical and cultural contexts in which the poetry is embedded. Old familiar poems are thrown into new relationships, and traditional views of the poetry of the period challenged.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. This edition presents the most comprehensive selection of Byron's poetry and prose ever collected in a single volume. The poetry section includes the complete texts of his masterpieces, Childe Harold's Pilgrimage and Don Juan, as well as representative examples of his satires, tales, plays and short poems. Among the selected prose entries are letters, journal excerpts, essays, and other formal prose. These texts are, in every case, based on the most recent and authoritative editorial work, and incorporate many corrections to both poetry and prose. Byron offers readers the unique opportunity to appreciate the dual literary achievment of one of the romantic period's most flamboyant and most influential artists.…
