Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. This appears to be printing 1943A-11 of the 13th Hardy Boys adventure, as per the fifth edition of Carpentieri. (You may, of course, buy if you wish from booksellers who let their computers list every printing of this book as "published 1934.") Twenty-one HBs (through "Broken Blade", January, 1942) to front flap, which is price-coded to reflect the wartime price-fixing scheme "P.C.J." Copyright page lists 13 HBs through this title; jacket rear flap lists 20 Ted Scotts through "Pursuit Patrol" (1943); jacket rear panel offers 14 X-Bar-X Boys through "With the Secret Rangers" (1936.) Glossy frontispiece and jacket art are both signed (though of course not HAND-signed) "Gretta." Pages show considerable age-browning, mostly to edges, but are still flexible & easily read. Book will close its own boards as well as its text block, but there are a few rough spots to rear board. Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. The Hardy boys in suits and fedoras? True, his 1933 glossy frontispiece had been replaced with a plain-paper effort by A.O. Scott as of 1944. But along with his work on the previous year's "While the Clock Ticked," J. Clemens Gretta's 1933 jacket illustration for this, the twelfth Hardy Boys mystery (said jacket illustration retained here), finds him at the peak of his craft -- even if the text reveals the Hardy brothers weren't actually present for the fight on the pier. The book itself, of course, gives us the typical Politically Incorrect (and just plain poorly researched) cliches of the times, with pigtailed "Chinamen" showing no particular excess of courage as they converse in a largely undifferentiated pidgin. (But Heck, the Stratemeyer sisters cut McFarlane's Depression-era pay to a whopping $85 for this effort; what did they expect?) This particular copy is the 1947A-22 edition, per the fifth edition of Carpentieri's "Hardy and Hardy Investigations," with 25 HBs to jacket front flap (through "The Secret Panel") and 23 Aviation Stories to rear panel. This was the final printing on acidic wartime paper, which here is fairly well age-browned as usual, though still flexible and easily read. NO PONs found in this copy, though jacket front flap IS price-clipped. Frontispiece is (again) a line drawing on uncoated paper (NOT a glossy plate), the jacket "near-fine" with slight rub to corners.
