Ships in a box, quickly & w/care. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ SYNOPSIS & HISTORY: Documenting the 1986 American retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, Jannis Kounellis is the English-language monograph on the Greek-Italian artist of the Arte Povera movement. Issued in a print run limited to 6,000 copies, the volume surveys Kounellis's work from 1958 through 1986, tracing his transition from typographic canvas paintings to monumental spatial tableaux. The catalog examines how Kounellis deployed raw industrial matter, structural iron beams, coal, steel bed frames and propane gas torches, alongside burlap, soot and classical plaster casts, to investigate cultural memory, European history and post-war alienation. Italian graphic production was typeset in Gill and manufactured by Arti Grafiche delle Venezie di Vicenza under Gruppo Mondadori. The interior is printed on heavy matte art paper, with full-page monochrome photographic plates, multi-color process installation plates and documentation of site-specific architectural interventions across European and American galleries. Michael Glass Design of Chicago directed the visual typography. Kounellis emerged as a central figure of the Italian Arte Povera movement during the late 1960s in Rome, setting aside academic aesthetics in favor of unrefined materials and sensory theatricality. By introducing elemental fire, living animals, raw commodities and architectural blockages into exhibition halls, his work challenged modern capitalist production while evoking mythological archetypes and classical Mediterranean heritage. Curated by Mary Jane Jacob, the volume carries essays by Thomas McEvilley and contributions from I. Michael Danoff and Graziella Lonardi Buontempo, a 160-work chronological catalogue, an exhibition history from 1960 through 1986, and a multilingual bibliography.…
