Meals took so long to prepare that we probably burned up most of the dead wood in the high country. As with McDermand, we felt lucky if we could go a week with less than 60 lb. on our backs. I remember friends castigating McDermand, who worked as a salesman at the Emporium Sports Dept. in San Francisco, because his books encouraged so many fishermen to visit the High Sierras. In those days, we could walk a week without seeing another party.
