Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. First impression of the true first edition. Profusely illustrated with black and white photographs, including frontispiece of Louis Armstrong. ***Very good in dark blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still quit…e bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. Head and tail of spine slightly creased, faded and rubbed. The edges of the boards are also faded and rubbed, with some mottling to the cloth at the fore-edge of the front board. Page block edges quite clean. Very slight reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also very good with no inscriptions. Pages clean. ***In a very good example of the original dustwrapper, which is printed on extremely thin paper. The dustwrapper has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 8s 6d net, and is largely complete, but with some areas of loss at the head and tail of the spine and smaller loss at the corner tips. There is also a small chip at the top edge of the front panel. There is general rubbing, edge-wear and small nicks and creases to the dustwrapper edges, but no significant tears. The dustwrapper is also marked with age and handling, especially on the back panel which is white. Off-setting from old sellotape to head and tail of spine of dustwrapper. (please see scans) ***171 pages. 188mm x 128mm. ***'This is the first of a yearly series of Jazzbooks to be edited by Mr. Albert McCarthy. It includes articles by English and American writers on jazz, which attempt to establish for the first time some sort of valid criteria for the appreciation of the art, as well as providing criticism of individual players. There are also historical pieces which trace the origins of swing from the negro workers' songs and the brass bands and small orchestras which played in the streets, the bars and the sporting houses of New Orleans, that "wide-open town" of the Nineties. An interesting feature is the section in which famous jazz musicians, among them Louis Armstrong, write about their early experiences. There are, as wel, general articles bearing on jazz by writers of the calibre of Henry Miller and poems by Nicholas Moore and others. The book is illustrated by twelve photographs of prominent jazz musicians.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A first impression of the true first edition - a fascinating period study of the world of jazz in the 1940s. A scarce title to find in an (almost) complete dustwrapper. The production of this book is quite poor due to post-war paper restrictions. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. First impression of the true first edition. Profusely illustrated with twenty-four black and white photographs including Louis Armstrong, Jelly-Roll Morton, Duke Ellington, Django Reinhardt, Count Basie Band, Dizzy Gillespie et al at the back…of the book. ***Included with this copy is some loosely inserted ephemera: an original Foyle's Bookshop purchase receipt. (please see scans) ***Very good in variant binding of light-grey boards with dark-green gilt cloth-covered spine (we have another example listed which is bound in the same light-grey boards but with a cream gilt cloth-covered spine). The fragile boards are discoloured and rubbed, with fading at the edges. The gilt titles however are still beautifully bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. Corners slightly rubbed and creased. Top edge of page block darkened. For-edge of page block foxed. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also very good, with a neat contemporary ownership inscription on the front free endpaper. Pages clean. No creases or tears. ***In a very good example of the original dustwrapper, which is printed on extremely thin paper. The dustwrapper is largely complete, but has been corner price-clipped, and has an area of loss at the head of the spine, with a smaller area of loss at the corner tips. The dustwrapper is also marked with age and handling, especially on the back panel which is white. (please see scans) ***188 pages 226mm x 142mm. ***'This anthology of articles on Swing, edited by Mr. Albert McCarthy, one of the foremost critics and propagandists of the art, will satisfy a long-felt want among those who take their jazz seriously. Not only does it include work by English and American critics but it also gives a comprehensive picture of the jazz situation all over Europe. Among others, M. Hugues Panassié, the well-known French critic, contributes an article on Fats Waller in Paris. An unusual feature is the inclusion of a Poetry section, and in addition to this there are photographs of the leading instrumentalists and a detailed review, with lists, of the most important jazz recordings of the past year. (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A first impression of the true first edition - a fascinating period study of the world of jazz in the 1940s - and with the added interest of the enclosed ephemera. A scarce title to find in an (almost) complete dustwrapper.
