A one-off, colorfully printed newspaper issued as a tactical manual ahead of the May 1971 anti-war protests organized in Washington, D. C. with the intent of shutting down the federal government. One of the slogans from the protests was, "If the government won't stop the war, we'll stop the government." The protests were largely ineffectual as Nixon deployed a huge number of federal forces to keep protestors from shutting down the city, although the government was criticized for its heavy handed response (12,000 protestors were arrested over the course of the week). This newspaper was issued by the May Day Collective, which was composed of Rennie Davis and other well-known anti-war organizers. It features a large DC map printed on two pages showing 21 targets that included DuPont Circle, Theodore Roosevelt Bridge, Key Bridge, etc. Also included is a two-page spread titled "Closing down the government: MayDay tactics & targets," a beautiful, color centerfold poster titled Dawn on the Potomac featuring two militant hippies, an article titled, "Vietnam Must Live," short profiles of various contingents (Gay Mayday Tribe, SCLC, VVAW, New Action Army, and much more. Tabloid format printed in color on newsprint, 16 p., illus. Light wear along the top edge, negligible chipping to the top corner, but a well-preserved copy.
