Rather spectacular full-page color illustrations (in every issue, in fact) by the coterie of guys who knew how to do what you see here. In the case of this issue, Cheri Herouard; Maurice Milliere; Georges Pavis; Pierre Lissac; Armand Vallee are credited for the big stuff, but some of the other very credit-worthy art is uncredited. Cute humor, from the same mood as mutoscope cards, or perhaps a bit (only a bit) more refined, yields the cover art caption: "Impertinence de Mi-Careme / Un Pied de Nez", for which I do not know the colloquial translation, for an artful depiction of a young lass about to don a mask; on the back cover, a king welcomes a brand spanking new young queen, who flirts with the old guy for her own reasons, as he gushes admiration of her. Understandably. Similar captioning throughout. Gentle titillation. Even the occasional partial nudity is rather tasteful and soft, though humorously flirtatious. All of the full page efforts are eminently frame-able, and at this time of a sensibility midway-evolved between nouveau and deco, as is much of the uncredited b&w illustration. An original - and of course first and only edition - of the 3/18/1922 issue of this memorable and long-lived French weekly offering of very soft, very artful light erotica. The captioned illustrations by the eminent "dessins" luminaries named above, and others in their clan, are what really "make" this issue (as was generally the case through the era), but cartoons, serial fiction and around-town pieces nicely compliment those. Signature au crayon en bas de l'aquarelle.À partir de 1917, Millière publie de grandes quantités de représentations de femmes en petite tenue : d'abord dans Fantasio (1917), puis Bagatelles, La Vie parisienne, Le Frou-frou, Le Sourire, le Gai-Paris, etc. Certainement un dessin préparatoire pour l'une des revues de mode dans lesquelles MauriceMillière s'imposera.Artiste peintre, illustrateur et lithographe français, il est l'un des inventeurs de la « petite femme de Millière, une Parisienne souriante ».Petit trou en bas à droite de l'aquarelle. Mouillure en marge supérieure. Encre de chine et aquarelle en médaillon. Feuille de 35 x 27 cm. Encadrement moderne.

Dimensions (marges incluses) : 697 x 527 mm + cadre. Grande épreuve en couleurs réalisée circa 1910, justifiée (88) et signée à la mine de plomb par l'artiste en marge inférieure. Unconsciously erotic and quite adorable, his portrayals became known as "Femmes Poupées" (doll-women) and through them, he created the genre of boudoir art. He also illustrated several books, including works by Gyp and Maurice Vaucaire. He travelled and worked in the French colonies, including Martinique.Millière developed into an establishment artist and he exhibited widely, at commercial galleries and at the Paris Salon as well as the Salon des Humoristes and l'Exposition Coloniale, where he was a gold medallist in 1931, when he was 59.Millière died at the age of 74, in 1946.
