FIRST EDITION, FIRST IMPRESSION. PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Sir Ronald Storrs (1881-1955), one of the contributors, to the poet Ruth Pitter (1897-1992), "For My dear Ruth, from the most affectionate (and not the least constant) of her unnumbered admirers, RS, Whitsun 53." With Pitter's library plate to flyleaf, and loosely inserted a typed letter signed from Storrs to Pitter dated 25 May 1953 praising her recent poetry collection, The Ermine: "There is no faltering in your power and nothing mechanical or formal in the increased sureness of your always noble technique. So please, accept a gratitude which can only be equalled by its accompanying admiration. Accept also in the same envelope ? the little collection of tributes to Eddie Marsh, remembering, I hope, that it was owing to him that we ever met." Remembered chiefly for editing five anthologies of Georgian poetry and for his close friendship with Rupert Brooke, it was near the start of his long career as a civil servant that Sir Edward Marsh (1872-1953) met Ronald Storrs, an official in the Foreign Office, whose own fame now hangs mainly on his association with T.E. Lawrence. Storrs contributes a vivid eulogy remembering their earliest meetings, including breakfasts in Marsh's "spacious but always over-crowded chambers. Once or twice, we were there with Rupert Brooke." Octavo. Original wrappers with integral pictorial dust jacket. Externally a little creased and worn particularly to edges, contents bright. A superb association copy.
