It chronicles the evolution of three influential magazinesâ"White Noise, Fun, and Orbitâ"all spearheaded by artist and provocateur Jerry Peterson, known as Jerry Vile. Beginning with White Noise, a punk zine active from 1978 to 1980, the anthology traces the transition to Fun: The Magazine for Swinging Intellectuals (1986â"1990) , noted for its satirical edge and bold design. This progression culminated in Orbit (1990â"1999) , a publication that blended irreverent humour, cultural commentary, and striking visuals, becoming a staple of 1990s Detroit culture. Orbit featured a distinctive globe-headed mascot and gained wider recognition when Quentin Tarantino wore its T-shirt in Pulp Fiction. The anthology includes interviews with former staff, reproductions of original layouts, and showcases contributions from notable Detroit artists and musicians such as Jack White, Kid Rock, and Derrick May. With a foreword by Jerry Vile and an afterword by Ben Blackwell, the volume offers insights into the creative processes and cultural impact of these publications.
