These recipes were collected by Mrs. Grierson during her husband's military career (1862-1888) and used to some extent at the many postings he had until her death in 1888. During a posting to Fort Davis Texas the family obtained some ranch land there and this is where the cookbook came to light in 1935. The book was a hodge podge of handwritten recipes, newspaper clippings, and recipes from friend and relatives pasted into a book format. Over 100 recipes in this book were selected and tested by National Park wives. Mrs. Grierson's recipe is listed first and the modern adaptation and method of preparation below. Her recipes reflect the ingenuity of a frontier wife for substitutes when certain ingredients were unavailable. Also included are some home remedies and housekeeping hints from the 1880s. The original work contained approximately 600 recipies, only a portion of which are included in the present work. Palmer's now-legendary paranormal-reporting non-fiction enterprise, which began with, in its first issue, Kenneth Arnold's cover account of flying crescents which "skipped like saucers across a pond", an event which, for whatever reason, kicked off the modern era of UFO events. After that, Fate introduced countless events which remain, to this day, fodder for paranormal documentaries and investigation. 12mo, illustrated perfect-bound wraps, 130 pp. A Near Fine copy - very near fine - with almost nothing to point to; micro-touching at spine and a touch of fade at left side of front cover (scan).
