Part of the 5th Battalion, he served for over 3 years and witnessed some of the largest and most catastrophic battles of World War 1. From the very beginning, when George was sent to Egypt to undertak e training with some of the first of the enlisted men, he wrote home. He documen ted his daily life in the war - the events, his feelings and opinions - and sent these messages and photographs back to his family in Melbourne. His military experience took him through some of the most notorious battles of the war - he was sent to Gallipoli and fought in the battle of Lone Pine, ev entually being evacuated when the troops were pulled out. He was then sent to Fr ance where he was a part of the infamous Fromelles battle, where in one night mo re than 5000 Australian casualties virtually wiped out his Division. He went on to Bullecourt, also a notorious battleground on the Western front, where he was seriously injured, putting an end to his army career. His letters tell his story beginning with the excitement of signing up and sailing across the world to fig ht the enemy, to world weary after having seen so much death and destruction. Hi s letters tell the revealing real-life story of Gallipoli, Fromelles and Bulleco urt. March, 1955 / issue number 8 under the name Inside and Science Fiction Advertiser (which is the last name for the famed sci-fi / fantasy fanzine, which was also published under the earlier names "Fantasy Advertiser" and "Science Fiction Advertiser", though the primary focus was always Science Fiction). Ron Smith became the Editor/Publisher with the November, 1954 issue, which was also the first under this name. Octavo, stapled illustrated wraps, 38 pp. Near Fine; thin peripheral toning (see scans). This March / 1955 issue was published as Ron Smith was in the process of improving the fanzine, which had been erratic in quality in prior years; 1956, yet to come, would be perhaps the best year. This issue features two sci-fi stories, The Ship and Son, a relative rarity for the article-oriented fanzine; and probably its finest collection of illustrations to this point in time - thanks to the efforts of art editor Cindy Smith.
