Bartels war nie beigebunden; feines Expl. Erstdruck! Martin Wilhelm v. Mandt (1800-1858), kaiserlich russischer Geheimer Rath, Leibarzt und Professor zu St. Petersburg, war am 6. August 1800 zu Beyenburg an der Wipper (Kreis Lennep), wo sein Vater, der später nach Remscheid zog, Wundarzt war, geboren. Von 1813 an besuchte er das Gymnasium in Düren, wurde, nachdem er von seinem Vater einige Kenntnisse in der Anatomie und im Wundverbande erhalten, zu Ende des Jahres 1816 von dem Professor und Generalarzt C.F. Gräfe zu Düsseldorf unter die Zahl der Lazarethchirurgen aufgenommen und nach Aachen zur Behandlung der dort noch befindlichen Verwundeten gesandt. Er blieb daselbst auch während des Jahres 1817, wurde dann nach Thionville geschickt und that im dortigen preußischen Militärlazareth zwei Jahre lang Dienste. Zu Anfang des Jahres 1819 wurde er nach Berlin zu einem dortigen Regimente versetzt und besuchte die Universität daselbst, bis er auf Anregung Rudolphi's, dessen besonderer Gunst er sich erfreute, und mit einer Staatsunterstützung versehen, vom März bis September 1821 von Hamburg aus mit dem Schiffe "Blücher", einem Wallfischfänger, unter dem englischen Capitän John Rose eine Reise nach Grönland und Spitzbergen in der Eigenschaft eines Schiffsarztes unternahm, die ihn bis zum 81° n. Br. führte und deren zoologische Resultate, namentlich die arktischen Säugethiere betreffend, er, nachdem er Assistent des anatomischen Museums geworden, in seiner Rudolphi und Lichtenstein gewidmeten Inauguraldissertation (22. Juli 1822) "Observationes in historiam naturalem et anatomiam comparatam in itinere Groenlandico factae", Berolini 1822, niederlegte. Im Winter 1823/24 absolvirte er die medicinische Staatsprüfung und konnte, da er dieselbe mit dem Prädicate "vorzüglich" bestanden, daran sogleich die Physikatsprüfung schließen, die bis Ende 1824 ebenfalls mit der besten Censur zurückgelegt war. Bereits im Februar 1825 erhielt er das Kreis-Physikat in Küstrin und damit einen sehr ausgedehnten Wirkungskreis. Seine litterarischen Arbeiten in der Zeit seines Küstriner Aufenthalts waren einige Aufsätze in Rust's Magazin (Bd. 19, 22, 1825, 1826) und eine "Praktische Darstellung der wichtigsten ansteckenden Epidemien und Epizootien, in ihrer Bedeutung für die medicinische Polizei", Berlin 1828. - 1829 wurde ihm von der Greifswalder medicinischen Facultät durch seinen Amtsvorgänger Berndt, der dorthin von Küstrin aus berufen worden war, der Antrag gemacht, an Stelle des seit zwei Jahren verstorbenen Sprengel, die ordentliche Professur der Chirurgie zu übernehmen. Er siedelte daher im Frühjahr 1830 nach Greifswald über, woselbst er in der medicinischen Facultät, außer Berndt, nur noch 2 Docenten und 7 Studenten vorfand, indem namentlich die anatomisch-physiologische Professur unbesetzt war. Nachdem diese durch eine Berufung besetzt, von M. eine chirurgisch-augenärztliche Klinik eingerichtet und damit ein regelmäßiger Unterricht ermöglicht war, vermehrte sich auch die Zahl der Studirenden und gelang es im folgenden Jahre dem Einflusse Mandt's zu erreichen, daß in Greifswald auch, wie in Breslau, eine Chirurgenschule errichtet wurde. Er wurde zum Director derselben ernannt und ertheilte nebst seinen Collegen aus der Facultät den Unterricht in diesem Institut, das in kürzester Zeit 40 Zöglinge zählte. Im Jahre 1832 machte er eine 6monatliche wissenschaftliche Reise durch Deutschland, Italien, Frankreich und England und erstattete danach einen sehr detaillirten Bericht, namentlich über die Irrenanstalten, denen er auf seiner Reise besondere Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet hatte. Es erschienen von ihm in dieser Zeit (1832-34) in Rust's Magazin (Bd. 37, 42) mehre Abhandlungen, wie "Exarticulatio humeri. Würdigung ihrer Historie, nebst einer neuen Operationsmethode", .
