Very Good in Dustjacket. 0804432805. 615 pages. hardcover. keywords: Europe Spain Portugal Literary Criticism. DESCRIPTION - This volume in the acclaimed reference series A Library of Literary Criticism explores in excerpts of criticism the works of some 80 major twentieth-century authors writing in Spanish, Catalan, Galician, and Portuguese. As in other volumes in the series, the critical excerpts in Modem Spanish and Portuguese Literatures are chronologically organized under each author. The authors-alphabetically arranged-are divided into two sections: Spain and Portugal. Though some of these writers are well known to English-speaking readers, others remain to be 'discovered.' The excerpts themselves represent a variety of sources-books, scholarly journals, general periodicals, and newspapers. Many excerpts are newly translated by the editors expressly for this volume. Selections date from the turn of the century to the present. Collectively, the entries on a particular author give a convenient overview and impression of the author's growth, status, or special qualities; or they may trace new avenues of interest in his work taken by successive generations of readers. Among its nearly 800 entries, Modem Spanish and Portuguese Literatures includes a wealth of writers commenting on the work of other authors: Conrad Aiken on Garcia Lorca; Saul Bellow on Camilo Jose Cela and Jose Ortega y Gasset; Ortega y Gasset on Angel Ganivet and Ramdn Perez de Ayala; Robert Bly on Juan Ramdn Jimenez; Borges on Unamuno; John Dos Passos on Blasco Ibañez and Antonio Machado; Carlos Fuentes on Juan Goytisolo; Goytisolo on Rafael Sanchez Ferlosio; William Dean Howells on Benito Perez Galdos; Octavio Paz on Cernuda; Ramon J. Sender on Arturo Barea; and Teixeira de Pascoaes on Raul Brandão, among many others. This volume is enhanced by an extensive introduction by the editors, a section of Works Mentioned that includes all works appearing in the critical selections (with full bibliographic information on existing English translations as well), and an Index to Critics. For students, librarians, scholars, and journalists, Modem Spanish and Portuguese Literatures is an essential-and fascinating-mosaic portrait of Iberian literature in the twentieth century. inventory #16925.…
