In het boek wordt behalve de historie van de werf ook de levensloop van alle door de werf gebouwde schepen beschreven. De beschrijving van de historie van de werfgebouwen gaat terug naar het jaar 1902. Het jaar waarin voor de firma Wortelboer & Co. aan het Winschoterdiep in Westerbroek, daar waar later de werf van Bröerken zou worden gevestigd, de eerste werfgebouwen werden gebouwd. Ook de historie van deze werf komt in het boek uitgebreid aan de orde. Tegenwoordig zijn de nog aanwezige gebouwen, die nu als jachtwerf worden gebruikt, en de kielbalk door de gemeente Hoogezand-Sappemeer aangewezen als gemeentelijk monument. De werf Westerbroek was vanaf 1941 eigendom van Johannes Gerardus Bröerken Sr. en zijn drie zonen. De werf bouwde tot 1972, het jaar waarin de werf wegens gebrek aan nieuwe opdrachten werd gesloten, voornamelijk kustvaartuigen.
