      Fourth Draft script for the 1988 film. Based on the 1985 novel by Joseph Olshan. A family is in crisis following the death of their child from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The mother takes a trip to Jamaica, where she meets Clara Mayfield (Goldberg) who helps her overcome her grief with her no-nonsense straight talk. The mother invites her back to Baltimore to raise their young son (Harris), and Clara is eventually compelled to reveal dark secrets about her past. Pink titled wrappers. Title page present, dated April 8, 1987, noted as Fourth Draft, with credits for screenwriter Medoff and writer Olshan. 128 leaves, mechanical duplication. A vintage script created for internal distribution, four years prior to the film's release, with copied manuscript annotations throughout noting deletions and editorial revisions, copied punch holes, and one manuscript pencil annotation, noting the name "Morrison" on the title page. Based on Mark Medoff's Tony Award-winning 1979 play. A speech teacher at a school for the deaf falls in love with the school's janitor, a deaf woman who has resigned herself to a life of isolation and silence due to her reluctance to learn to communicate with the hearing. Nominated for five Academy Awards, winning one for Best Leading Actress for Marlee Matlin (making Matlin the first deaf recipient of an Academy Award). Set and shot on location in Saint John, New Brunswick. Brown titled wrappers.
