Añadir al carritoHardback. Condición: Good. Marian Ellis Ilustrador. De la Mare, Walter. Henry Brocken: His Travels and Adventures in the Rich, Strange, Scarce-Imaginable Regions of Romance. London: W. Collins Sons & Co. Ltd., [n.d.] Later edition, c. 1925. (First issued in 1904.) Octavo, 237 pp. + 2 pp. of publisher ads. Original blue cloth, front and spine stamped in black, fore- and bottom edges untrimmed. Illustrated with woodcuts by Marian Ellis on inserted plates. Bookplate on front pastedown. Light wear at top of spine, darkening and patchy fading to cloth, but a soundly bound, good clean copy. #1045. $25. The author's first work of fiction. An early example of what might today be called meta-fiction, or fan fiction or a biblio-fantasy. It "hovers strangely between the abstract and the particular. Brocken sets out on an allegorical journey to various booklands, where he meets characters like Jane Eyre, Nick Bottom, Sleeping Beauty and Criseyde; but the mild educational benignity of the trip is destroyed, in the end, by Brocken's refusal of Criseyde's erotic needs, and he is cast back, defeated, into a dry mortality." -- Clute and Grant, The Encyclopedia of Fantasy, p. 261. Bleiler, Supernatural Fiction Writers, pp. 499-500. Reginald 04029.
