Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This illustrated history portrays one of Englands finest cities. It provides a nostalgic look at Southamptons past and highlights the special character of some of its most important historic sites. The photographs are taken from the Historic England Archive, a unique collection of over 12 million photographs, drawings, plans and documents covering Englands archaeology, architecture, social and local history. Pictures date from the earliest days of photography to the present and cover subjects from Bronze Age burials and medieval churches to cinemas and seaside resorts.Historic England: Southampton shows the city as it once was, from its churches, parks, streets and alleyways to its famous old docks. The city, once a popular eighteenth-century spa resort, has grown with the expansion of its commercial docks throughout the last 200 years and has witnessed everything from seamens strikes to shipwrecks, notably the Titanic and Queen Mary, as well as the other famous ocean liners that have called at the port since the 1840s. The city suffered greatly during the twentieth century when extensive Second World War bombing and subsequent town planning led to a reduction in the number of many fine and interesting buildings. Dramatic changes have taken place and, by the late twentieth century and into the twenty-first century, it has been transformed into a new, dynamic, bustling city. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Remarkable overview of the history of the Southampton Docks, from it's earliest to most recent developments, to explore what has made it the enormous industrial estate it is today. It is aided by fascinating early maps and photographs to illustrate the magnitude of the changes made to the docks through time. To most Southampton citizens, and indeed many visitors, the view of the Docks on its doorstep is a familiar sight witnessed daily without much of a second thought - as if it has always been there. Countless books have been written about the docks and many have referred to various stages of its development, but few have told the fuller story of its evolution from a couple of small basins clawed from the mud to the enormous industrial estate it is today. This book, with the aid of early maps and photographs, explores and illustrates the various stages of the docks growth and progress under an array of owners over the passage of time.It explores everything from how it was built from the earliest days of its commencement under the ownership of the Southampton Dock Company, to its final expansion to Redbridge in 1996 under private owners Associated British Ports, bringing the story up to date. Illustrates the various stages of the docks growth and progress under an array of owners over the passage of time. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The railways in and around London's docks were arteries to the national railway system at a time when all heavy goods were moved by rail. As well as freight, the Port of London moved vast numbers of people by train around its domain - not just ships' passengers but also dock workers, who were transported from their city dwellings to a host of dockside locations. This book describes the dawn of the major rail-served docks, and traces the evolution of the capital's quayside railways and their locomotives from the days of the early dock companies through to what became the Port of London Authority's huge undertaking.Over two volumes, we see the growth of the dock company railways from simple sidings to a vast network under the Port of London Authority, together with full histories of over 100 locomotives that worked the various quays and sheds. Part 1 looked at the systems operating in and around the Isle of Dogs at the Millwall and India Docks, and included various other railway wharves in the area. Part 2 chronicles the Royal Docks and their associated tracks, primarily the Victoria, Albert and King George V Docks, and also includes other associated and industrial railways in the vicinity. The absorbing story of these industrial lines and locomotives is traced from their humble origins to what became one of the largest private railways in the country, but which are now nothing more than a memory that serves to remind us of one of the foremost periods in Britain's industrial history. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…
