Original engraving with modern bodycolour. Very good condition apart from somel light soiling and mild rippling. A fine plate from 'Vestigia delle terme di Tito e loro interne pitture' of an ancient fresco from the 'Domus Aureus', Nero's sumptuous imperial complex in Rome. Situated between the Palatine and Esquiline Hills in Rome and designed by architects Severus and Celer, the Domus Aureus (Golden House) was erected by Nero in 64 AD after the great fire in Rome. The magnitude and decadent extravagance of the impressive gold-covered, jewel bedecked palace was intended to glorify the Emperor's reign. Its rooms were filled with lavish furniture and its walls and ceilings covered with decorative late-Hellenistic murals by the renowned ancient artist Fabullus. Nero, however, died in 68 AD before the Domus was totally completed. Years later, Titus (and later Trajan) built his thermal bath over its ruins, which were used as a foundation for and were partially preserved by Titus' edifice. Successive emperors continued to erect various buildings on the site and subsequently make several renovations to the Domus substructure. In 1480, practically forgotten, the Domus was excavated, and its subterranean passages and rooms thereafter became known as 'le grotte' (cave). Many of its original frescoes survived, and their motifs and ancient style of ornamentation, called 'grotteschi' (grotesque) after 'grotte', became extremely popular during the Renaissance, influencing many prominent artists such as Raphael, Michelangelo, Ghirlandio, and Pinturicchio. Published in the late eighteenth century, 'Vestigia delle terme di Tito e loro interne pitture' is an elaborate album of engravings depicting the stunning 'al fresco' and 'al stucco' murals of Nero's Domus Aureus. Carloni's colourful and beautifully rendered plates faithfully capture the grotesque style of the ancient frescoes, which was characterized by decorative borders filled with whimsical, often comical animals and foliage taken from both nature and the artist's imagination. The ornamental borders also served the practical functions of framing the central mythological, religious, or historical subject portrayed and separating the various murals in a single decorative scheme.…

The Myth of Phaethon in Nero's Golden House A Spectacular Originally Hand-Colored Classical Scene From Mirri's Rare Luxury Colored Issue of the Vestigia delle Terme di Tito CARLONI, Marco (1742-1796), engraver, after SMUGLEWICZ, Franciszek (1745-1807). Scene from the Story of Phaethon. Plate 15 from Vestigia delle terme di Tito e loro interne pitture. Rome: Presso Ludovico Mirri, 1776-1778. Original etching and engraving with contemporary hand coloring in watercolor and gouache, from the rare luxury colored issue. Plate mark 18 1/4 x 14 1/8 inches (463 x 359 mm.). Beautifully matted, framed and glazed in a handsome gilt frame; overall framed size 28 x 23 3/4 inches (711 x 603 mm.). A fine example, the original colors remarkably fresh and brilliant. A spectacular originally hand-colored plate from one of the most important and visually sumptuous archaeological publications of eighteenth-century Rome, recording an ancient painted scene from the story of Phaethon discovered in the ruins of Nero's legendary Golden House. The composition presents a wonderfully animated classical scene against an intense blue ground. Four figures accompany a spirited dark horse and a small two-wheeled chariot. At the left stands a youthful nude male figure, a long red and gold mantle billowing dramatically around him; beside the horse appears a blue-robed figure crowned with foliage. A further figure in rose-red stands immediately behind the chariot, while at the right a green-robed figure carries a long staff entwined by a serpent. A slender classical column closes the composition at the right. Modern scholarship identifies Plates 13-15 of Mirri's Vestigia as illustrations of scenes from the story of Phaethon, the ill-fated son of the sun-god Helios. The Warburg/Engramma database specifically identifies the group as Carloni's engravings after drawings by Franciszek Smuglewicz and relates the sequence to Phaethon's appeal to Helios and the bringing of the horses of the Sun to Phaethon by the Horae. The central scene is enclosed within an exceptionally elaborate grotesque border. Fantastic vegetal forms, flowers, miniature figures, winged heads and peacock-like ornaments alternate against the white ground, while small classical figures appear within blue medallions at each corner. Brilliantly colored in blue, green, red, orange and gold, the border provides a remarkable demonstration of the ornamental vocabulary that so fascinated Renaissance artists when these buried Roman interiors were rediscovered. The plate comes from Vestigia delle terme di Tito e loro interne pitture, published in Rome by the antiquarian and art dealer Ludovico Mirri beginning in 1776. Mirri had obtained permission to excavate ancient rooms beneath the Esquiline Hill, then traditionally identified with the Baths of Titus, and commissioned artists to make careful records of their rapidly deteriorating painted decoration. The drawings for the series were principally made by the Polish painter Franciszek Smuglewicz, sometimes working in conjunction with the architect and designer Vincenzo Brenna, and were subsequently translated into prints by Marco Carloni. The Smithsonian confirms that the Vestigia plates were drawn by Smuglewicz and Brenna and engraved by Carloni. More detailed modern scholarship establishes Smuglewicz's predominant role, attributing thirty-four plates exclusively to him. The rooms were then believed to form part of the Baths of Titus, hence the title of Mirri's publication. They are now principally associated with Nero's Domus Aurea, or "Golden House," the immense palace complex constructed following the Great Fire of Rome in A.D. 64. Following Nero's death in A.D. 68, much of the complex was buried or incorporated into subsequent imperial construction. When its subterranean rooms were rediscovered during the Renaissance, artists descended into them as though entering caves or grotte. The fantastic painted ornament found upon their walls consequently became k.…

Emperor Nero's Golden House A Magnificent Originally Hand-Colored Plate from the Domus Aurea From Mirri's Rare Luxury Colored Issue of the Vestigia delle Terme di Tito CARLONI, Marco (1742-1796), engraver, after SMUGLEWICZ, Franciszek (1745-1807) and BRENNA, Vincenzo (1747-1818?). Architectural Decoration from the Domus Aurea. Plate 9 from Vestigia delle terme di Tito e loro interne pitture. Rome: Presso Ludovico Mirri, 1776-1778. Original etching and engraving with contemporary hand coloring in watercolor and gouache, from the rare luxury colored issue. Plate mark 22 7/8 x 12 1/4 inches (581 x 311 mm.). Beautifully matted, framed and glazed in a gilt frame; overall framed size 31 1/2 x 21 inches (800 x 533 mm.). A fine example, the original colors remarkably fresh and brilliant. A superb originally hand-colored plate from one of the most spectacular archaeological publications of eighteenth-century Rome, recording the extraordinary painted decoration discovered in the ruins of Nero's legendary Golden House. The composition reproduces an elaborate semicircular architectural decoration from the Domus Aurea, the enormous palace complex constructed for the Emperor Nero following the Great Fire of Rome in A.D. 64. Against a dramatic black and golden ground rises a fantastic symmetrical architectural structure of columns, pediments and painted panels. Classical figures occupy niches and elevated platforms; small mythological scenes appear within framed panels; delicate scrolling vegetation ornaments the walls; and two robed male figures stand within the lower architectural recesses. The whole is enclosed beneath an enormous semicircular arch, its coffered interior picked out in brilliant red, gold, white and black. The exceptionally rich hand coloring transforms Carloni's engraved architecture into a remarkably vivid evocation of the ancient painted interior. The plate comes from Vestigia delle terme di Tito e loro interne pitture, published in Rome by the antiquarian and art dealer Ludovico Mirri from 1776. Mirri had obtained permission in 1774 to excavate the ancient rooms beneath the Esquiline Hill, then traditionally identified with the Baths of Titus. He financed the excavations and commissioned artists to record the surviving decorations, principally the Polish painter Franciszek Smuglewicz and the architect and designer Vincenzo Brenna; their drawings were subsequently translated into etchings and engravings by Marco Carloni. Contemporary and institutional catalogues confirm the collaboration of Smuglewicz, Brenna and Carloni. The remains recorded were principally those of Nero's Domus Aurea, or "Golden House." After Nero's death in A.D. 68, much of the vast complex was buried or incorporated into subsequent imperial building projects. When its subterranean chambers were rediscovered during the Renaissance, artists descended into the grotte to study their surviving Roman wall paintings. Their fantastic combinations of architecture, foliage, animals, mythological figures and ornamental devices became known as grottesche, or grotesques, and exercised a profound influence upon Renaissance and later European decorative art. By the eighteenth century many of these ancient paintings were deteriorating rapidly, giving Mirri's undertaking an importance far beyond its considerable decorative appeal. Smuglewicz and Brenna recorded the interiors at a time when substantially more of their painted decoration remained visible than survives today. Of particular importance, the present plate belongs to Mirri's rare luxury hand-colored issue. The Vestigia was produced in two forms: a conventional monochrome version and a special version printed in outline and intended to be finished by hand in watercolor and gouache. Recent scholarship records Mirri's projected production of only thirty hand-colored sets and notes that subscribers were asked to reserve the colored version in advance. It has been suggested that these outline impressions may h.…

Emperor Nero's Golden House A Spectacular Originally Hand-Colored Figural Decoration From Mirri's Rare Luxury Colored Issue of the Vestigia delle Terme di Tito CARLONI, Marco (1742-1796), engraver, after SMUGLEWICZ, Franciszek (1745-1807) and BRENNA, Vincenzo (1745-1820). Figural Decoration from the Domus Aurea. Plate 16 from Vestigia delle terme di Tito e loro interne pitture. Rome: Presso Ludovico Mirri, 1776-1778. Original etching and engraving with contemporary hand coloring in watercolor and gouache, from the rare luxury colored issue. Plate mark 18 x 14 inches (457 x 356 mm.). Beautifully matted, framed and glazed in a handsome gilt frame; overall framed size 27 1/4 x 23 1/2 inches (692 x 597 mm.). A fine example, the original colors remarkably fresh and brilliant. A spectacular originally hand-colored plate from one of the most important and visually sumptuous archaeological publications of eighteenth-century Rome, recording the extraordinary painted decoration discovered in the ruins of Nero's legendary Golden House. Unlike the predominantly architectural compositions of Plates 9 and 41, the present plate is dominated by a striking figural scene set against an intense blue ground. Four classical figures stand between a solitary column and a leafless tree. Two elegantly draped female figures, one in rose-red and the other in blue-green, each carry an infant; between them appear a partially draped female figure in golden-yellow and a nude male figure wearing a distinctive winged helmet. The central scene is surrounded by a wonderfully elaborate ornamental border. Against a white ground are arranged fantastic floral and vegetal forms, fan-shaped ornaments, miniature human figures and small figural medallions, all brilliantly heightened in blue, green, red, orange and gold. The combination of classical figures, fantastic vegetation and ornamental invention provides a particularly beautiful example of the ancient Roman decorative vocabulary that became known after the Renaissance rediscovery of these buried interiors as grottesche, or grotesques. The plate comes from Vestigia delle terme di Tito e loro interne pitture, published in Rome by the antiquarian and art dealer Ludovico Mirri beginning in 1776. The monumental atlas was based upon drawings principally by the Polish painter Franciszek Smuglewicz and the architect and designer Vincenzo Brenna, subsequently translated into etchings and engravings by Marco Carloni. The Smithsonian catalogue confirms Smuglewicz and Brenna as the draughtsmen and Carloni as engraver. Mirri had obtained permission in 1774 to excavate the ancient rooms beneath the Esquiline Hill, then traditionally identified with the Baths of Titus. He financed the excavations and commissioned artists to make careful records of the surviving painted decorations before further deterioration destroyed them. The ruins recorded by these artists are now principally associated with Nero's Domus Aurea, or "Golden House," the vast imperial palace begun following the Great Fire of Rome in A.D. 64. Following Nero's death in A.D. 68, much of the complex was buried or incorporated into subsequent imperial building projects. Its rediscovery during the Renaissance profoundly affected European art. Artists descended into the buried chambers-as though entering underground grotte-to study the surviving Roman wall paintings. Their fantastic combinations of architecture, foliage, animals, human and mythological figures and ornamental devices consequently became known as grottesche, or grotesques, and exercised an enormous influence upon Renaissance and later European decorative art. By the eighteenth century many of these ancient paintings were deteriorating rapidly, giving Mirri's undertaking an importance far beyond its immediate decorative appeal. Smuglewicz and Brenna recorded the interiors at a moment when substantially more of their painted decoration remained visible than survives today. Of particular importance, the p.…

The Painted Splendor of Nero's Golden House A Magnificent Originally Hand-Colored Architectural Decoration From Mirri's Rare Luxury Colored Issue of the Vestigia delle Terme di Tito CARLONI, Marco (1742-1796), engraver, after BRENNA, Vincenzo (1745-1820). Architectural Decoration from the Domus Aurea. Plate 41 from Vestigia delle terme di Tito e loro interne pitture. Rome: Presso Ludovico Mirri, 1776-1778. Original etching and engraving with contemporary hand coloring in watercolor and gouache, from the rare luxury colored issue. Plate mark 23 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches (597 x 317 mm.). Finely matted and housed in a handsome gilt frame; overall framed size 32 x 21 inches (813 x 533 mm.). A fine example, the original colors remarkably fresh and brilliant. A superb originally hand-colored plate from one of the most spectacular archaeological publications of eighteenth-century Rome, recording the extraordinary painted decoration discovered in the ruins of Nero's legendary Golden House. The composition presents an elaborate architectural decoration beneath a great semicircular arch. Against a dramatic black ground rises a perfectly balanced arrangement of slender columns, pediments, niches and architectural panels in terracotta, ochre, green and white. A classical female figure occupies the central niche, while two further figures stand upon elevated platforms at either side. Delicate candelabra, garlands, urns and fantastical ornamental motifs complete the design. The extraordinary contrast between the deep black ground and the brilliant terracotta, gold, green and white of the architecture gives this plate an especially striking decorative presence. Its elaborate combination of imaginary architecture, classical figures and delicate ornament epitomizes the ancient Roman decorative vocabulary that became known in Renaissance Italy as the grottesche, or grotesques. The subject can be identified more precisely as the decorative scheme of the lunette of a room in the so-called Baths of Titus. Modern scholarship reproduces this very plate as Partiti decorativi della lunetta di una sala nelle Terme di Tito and identifies it specifically as "V. Brenna disegno, Carloni incise"-Vincenzo Brenna responsible for the drawing and Marco Carloni for its engraved translation. The plate comes from Vestigia delle terme di Tito e loro interne pitture, published in Rome by the antiquarian and art dealer Ludovico Mirri beginning in 1776. Mirri had obtained permission to excavate the ancient rooms beneath the Esquiline Hill, then traditionally identified with the Baths of Titus. He commissioned Vincenzo Brenna and the Polish painter Franciszek Smuglewicz to make painstaking records of the surviving decorations, which Marco Carloni subsequently translated into etchings and engravings. Contemporary documentation quoted by Treccani records that Brenna was specifically responsible for the ornament, architecture and internal plans-an attribution particularly appropriate to the present architectural plate. The ancient rooms were at the time believed to form part of the Baths of Titus, hence the title of Mirri's publication. They are now principally associated with the Domus Aurea, or Golden House, the immense palace complex constructed for the Emperor Nero following the Great Fire of Rome in A.D. 64. Following Nero's death in A.D. 68, much of the complex was deliberately buried or incorporated into subsequent imperial construction. When its subterranean rooms were rediscovered during the Renaissance, artists descended into them as though entering caves or grotte. The fantastic painted ornament found upon their walls consequently became known as grottesche-the origin of the term "grotesque"-and exercised a profound influence upon Renaissance and later European decorative art. By the eighteenth century many of the ancient paintings were deteriorating rapidly. Mirri's excavations and the resulting Vestigia therefore preserved a visual record of decorations at a time w.…
