The introduction says: "Die Instituut vir Eietydse Geskiedenis (INEG) aan die Universiteit van die Oranje-Vrystaat is in 1980 deur die Afrikaanse Persfonds onder trusteeskap van adv. B.J. Vorster (die destydse voorsitter), dr. A. Hertzog en mnr. J.J.H. Victor (die huidige voorsitter) genader om 'n wetenskaplike politieke biografie oor die lewe en werk van die gevierde staatsman, genl. J.B.M. Hertzog, saam te stel 'n projek wat ook deur die Afrikaanse Persfonds geborg sou word. Vir INEG, tans die tuiste van die Afrikaanse Persfonds se J.B.M.
